Job Description:

The primary function of this position is to operate/drive equipment in the day-to-day operations of the maintenance and repair of county roads and bridges. This is a Safety Sensitive Position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates heavy equipment.
  • Cleans storm drains.
  • Hauls asphalt, rock, dirt, and miscellaneous material in a dump truck.
  • Operates rollers, pavers, brooms, shovels, front-end loaders, backhoes, and tractors.
  • Cuts brush and chips debris off rights-of-way.
  • Uses mower-trimmer, blower, rake, machete, chainsaw, pole saw, buzz-bar, and chipper.
  • Installs and maintains culverts, drainage structures, and erosion control.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged or destroyed guard rails.
  • Patches asphalt.
  • Cleans injection wells.
  • Weed-eats around signs and guard rails.
  • Trims and cuts trees.
  • Picks up trash.
  • Maintains and performs safety inspections of all equipment and tools before use.
  • Assists in providing Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) in work areas.
  • Drives County vehicles, transports equipment, and operates equipment in a safe manner.
  • Maintains ALL required qualifications, licenses, and certificates.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork in the performance of daily duties.
  • Keeps work area clean, organized, and uses safety cones and signage when required.
  • Attends required training and safety meetings and uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Works extended hours during hurricanes, county emergencies, and other natural disasters; ON CALL during hurricane season.
  • In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, employee may be required to work schedules other than those for which they are regularly scheduled in any capacity deemed appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED. Two (2) years minimum of prior related work experience.

Special Qualifications:

Minimum requirement of Commercial Driver’s License Class “B”. Acquire and maintain TTC/IMOT FDOT Certification within 6 months of hire date. An employee in this position is subject to the mandatory Department of Transportation drug testing program, which involves random drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work from a general outline of duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform technical or trades-based work that requires a solid understanding of basic algebra and statistics OR use of heavy equipment. Some of the tasks performed include participating in data collection and detailed analysis; reporting on the accomplishment of specific departmental goals and tasks; OR operating or repairing heavy equipment (bulldozers, cranes, graders).
  • Ability to work in a responsive environment where co-workers or citizens bring problems for resolution; ability to determine problems and create individual solutions for issues.
  • Ability to work with fewer than ten co-workers who are mostly engaged in the same activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending the legs and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.
