Die Aufgaben

Die Verbindung von Form und Funktion – das ist das Metier der Technischen Produktdesigner und -designerinnen. Je nach Fachrichtung modellieren und entwickeln sie verschiedene technische Konstruktionen aller Größenordnungen: vom kleinen Kunststoffteil bis hin zur industriellen Fertigungsanlage. Kundenorientiert finden sie für jede technische Herausforderung eine passende Lösung, die den Vorgaben der Auftraggebebenden genau entspricht. Als Ausgangspunkt ihrer Arbeit dient oft die Konstruktionsskizze eines Ingenieurs oder einer Ingenieurin: Die setzen sie mit viel Know-how in ein exaktes Modell um, nach der das Objekt millimetergenau produziert werden kann. Technische Produktdesigner und Produktdesignerinnen gehen strukturiert und planvoll vor. Mit viel Sachverstand entscheiden sie, welche Werkstoffe und Fertigungsmethoden für einen Auftrag am zweckmäßigsten sind. Im Projektverlauf behalten sie stets den Überblick über die einzelnen Arbeitsschritte, die benötigten Materialien und die entstehenden Kosten. Neben technisch-handwerklichem Geschick und Organisationstalent verfügen sie auch über den nötigen Einfallsreichtum: So können sie knifflige Herausforderungen mit frischen Ideen pragmatisch meistern. Wenn sie nicht gerade an einer Besprechung im Konferenzraum teilnehmen, findet man Technische Produktdesigner und Produktdesignerinnen meist im Büro. Dort entwerfen sie maßstabsgetreue Modelle, Skizzen und Ansichten mithilfe spezieller CAD-Systeme („computer-aided design").
