Job Title: Senior Technician

Occupation: Technician / Field Operations Supervision

Experience Level: Senior GPS / Telematics Technician progressing into team leadership

Reports To: Operations Manager / Technical Manager

Role Purpose

Lead, coach, and quality-assure a team of telematics technicians responsible for the installation, calibration, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of GPS tracking, speed-limiting devices (SLD), electronic locking / e-seal systems, and IoT sensors on commercial vehicles, trailers, containers, and high-value cargo assets. The role combines senior hands-on technical capability with day-to-day supervisory accountability for safety, workmanship, documentation, customer communication, and first-time-right delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Supervision

• Supervise, train, and mentor telematics / GPS technicians across installation, service, and call-out work.

• Plan daily and weekly workloads; assign jobs according to skill, certification, location, and SLA priority.

• Conduct toolbox talks, ride-alongs, and structured on-the-job coaching.

• Monitor individual and team performance; provide timely feedback and complete formal reviews.

• Build a disciplined, safety-first culture with clear ownership of quality and customer outcomes.

Senior Technical Delivery (GPS, SLD, E-Locking, IoT)

• Act as the senior technical reference for GPS/GNSS tracking hardware, vehicle wiring, CAN/OBD interfaces, ignition and power management, antennas, and multi-network connectivity (LTE / 4G / 5G, Wi-Fi, satellite where applicable).

• Lead complex installations and retrofits of speed-limiting devices, including calibration, sealed settings, compliance checks, and post-fit verification against manufacturer and regulatory requirements.

• Oversee electronic locking, e-seal, door-sensor, and cargo-compartment security installations, including pairing, firmware, alarm logic, and platform integration.

• Specify, install, and commission IoT sensors (temperature, humidity, door/open, fuel, vibration/shock, geo-fence triggers) and validate live data on the tracking platform.

• Support technicians on difficult diagnostics: intermittent power, poor GNSS lock, SIM/APN faults, CAN mapping, sensor false alarms, and platform configuration errors.

• Stay current with device firmware, installer apps, OEM fitment guides, and emerging telematics / cargo-security technologies.

Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance

• Plan and coordinate device fitment on trucks, trailers, prime movers, light commercial vehicles, and selected fixed or mobile assets.

• Ensure correct mounting, loom routing, fusing, grounding, weather sealing, and concealment consistent with manufacturer guidelines and company standards.

• Oversee configuration, programming, and commissioning of units, peripherals, and associated software / portals.

• Schedule preventive maintenance, battery/health checks, firmware updates, and recertification of speed limiters and security devices.

Troubleshooting and Technical Support

• Provide second-line support for field faults that exceed first-line technician capability.

• Escalate hardware, SIM, platform, or integration defects to vendors and internal product / operations teams with clear evidence packs.

• Support system integration issues between onboard devices, IoT sensors, e-locks, and the operations / control-tower platform.

Quality, Safety and Compliance

• Inspect a sample of completed jobs; enforce first-time-right workmanship and photo/evidence standards.

• Ensure compliance with electrical safety, vehicle fitment best practice, company SOP, and applicable road-transport or speed-limiter regulations.

• Maintain complete job records: installation sheets, serial numbers, SIM/IMEI, calibration values, photos, customer sign-off, and fault history.

• Report near-misses, unsafe vehicle conditions, and non-conforming parts immediately.

Inventory, Tools and Assets

• Control stock of GPS units, speed limiters, e-locks, sensors, looms, SIMs, seals, and consumables.

• Coordinate with procurement so field kits remain complete and serviceable.

• Account for tools, test equipment (multimeters, OBD tools, GNSS testers), and technician vehicle kits.

Customer and Stakeholder Communication

• Liaise with customers, fleet managers, project managers, and operations on scope, access, downtime windows, and completion status.

• Give clear progress updates on delays, parts shortages, and technical constraints.

• Capture customer feedback and convert recurring field issues into SOP or product improvements.

Training and Capability Building

• Identify skill gaps in GPS fitment, SLD calibration, e-lock pairing, IoT sensor logic, and platform use.

• Design and run practical training, competency checks, and refresher sessions.

• Encourage certifications and continuous development aligned with new device families and markets.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• Senior GPS / telematics technician background: several years of hands-on installation, commissioning, calibration, and troubleshooting — not classroom-only experience.

• Proven field experience with GPS/GNSS vehicle tracking systems (hardware, wiring, antennas, SIM/APN, platform configuration).

• Hands-on experience with speed-limiting devices (installation, calibration, sealing, verification, and compliance documentation).

• Practical experience with electronic locking / e-seal systems and IoT sensors used for cargo and vehicle security or condition monitoring.

• Ability to read wiring diagrams, pinouts, technical manuals, and fitment guides.

• Strong electrical / automotive diagnostic skills (12V/24V systems, fusing, grounding, CAN/OBD familiarity).

• Prior experience coaching or informally leading technicians; ready to take formal supervisory accountability.

• Clear written and verbal communication with customers and internal teams.

• Valid driving licence; willingness to work on customer sites, workshops, and yards, including occasional after-hours or regional travel.

Preferred

• Diploma or equivalent in electrical engineering, automotive technology, mechatronics, or a related trade, plus substantial field tenure.

• Experience across mixed fleets (prime movers, trailers, rigid trucks, LCV) and high-security cargo applications.

• Familiarity with multi-network / multi-modal tracking (cellular, Wi-Fi, satellite) and control-tower or fleet platforms.

• Knowledge of relevant transport, speed-limiter, or cargo-security standards and customer audit expectations.

• Vendor or OEM installer certifications for major tracking, SLD, or e-lock brands.

Competencies

• Technical depth first — can still complete a complex fit or diagnosis personally when required.

• Calm, structured problem-solving under time pressure and live-fleet constraints.

• Attention to detail: serial control, photos, calibration records, and clean looms.

• Safety ownership for self, team, and customer assets.

• Coaching mindset: raises the standard of the whole team rather than only the strongest individuals.

• Proactive attitude — takes on wider responsibility, new device types, and process improvement.

Working Conditions

Workshop, customer depot, and roadside / yard environments. Physical work including vehicle access, cable routing, and device mounting. May require regional travel, standby, or extended hours to meet fleet downtime windows and SLA commitments.

Candidates should demonstrate a proactive attitude, willingness to take increased responsibility, and commitment to improving work quality, safety, and team capability.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
