Job Description – Service Manager, Marine Mechanical Equipment

Position: Service Manager – Marine Mechanical Equipment Industry: Marine / Shipping / Offshore Location: Singapore Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

Our client is a leading provider of marine mechanical equipment and after-sales services to shipowners, ship managers, shipyards and offshore customers.

They are looking for an experienced Service Manager to lead the service and after-sales function, overseeing service engineers, technicians and subcontractors while ensuring marine equipment servicing, repair, commissioning and troubleshooting activities are delivered efficiently and to a high standard.

The successful candidate will be responsible for both technical service operations and customer management, working closely with the Sales, Operations, Technical and Parts teams to support customers throughout the equipment lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the service department, including service engineers, technicians and supporting personnel.
  • Plan and coordinate service activities for marine mechanical equipment onboard vessels, at shipyards and at customer sites.
  • Manage the allocation and scheduling of service engineers and technicians based on project requirements and vessel schedules.
  • Act as the main point of contact for customers regarding service, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and technical support.
  • Liaise with shipowners, ship managers, vessel superintendents, shipyards and offshore customers to understand service requirements.
  • Review incoming service requests and determine the appropriate technical resources, manpower, tools and spare parts required.
  • Oversee installation, commissioning, inspection, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of marine mechanical equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to service engineers when dealing with complex equipment or operational issues.
  • Monitor service jobs from initial quotation and planning through to completion and invoicing.
  • Ensure service reports, job documentation and customer records are completed accurately and on time.
  • Review service reports and identify recurring equipment issues or potential product improvements.
  • Coordinate with the spare parts and sales teams to identify additional repair, replacement and upgrade opportunities.
  • Prepare and review service quotations, cost estimates and variation orders where required.
  • Monitor service department revenue, profitability, manpower utilisation and operational costs.
  • Manage relationships with external service contractors and ensure work is completed according to agreed standards.
  • Ensure service activities comply with company procedures, customer requirements, class requirements and applicable HSE standards.
  • Handle customer complaints and service escalations, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Develop and maintain service procedures, workflows and technical documentation.
  • Provide regular reports to management on service activities, ongoing projects, manpower requirements and business performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve service efficiency, customer satisfaction and after-sales revenue.
  • Support business development activities by providing technical and commercial input to customers and the Sales team.

Team Management

  • Lead, mentor and develop the service engineering team.
  • Conduct performance reviews and identify training and development requirements.
  • Ensure adequate manpower coverage for service projects and emergency requirements.
  • Establish clear work priorities and ensure engineers have the necessary technical and operational support.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, customer service and technical excellence.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Marine Technology or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of experience within the marine, shipping, offshore or industrial equipment industry.
  • Proven experience in marine mechanical equipment servicing, maintenance, repair or commissioning.
  • Previous experience managing or supervising a team of service engineers/technicians.
  • Strong understanding of marine mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Experience dealing directly with shipowners, ship managers, shipyards and vessel superintendents.
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to understand service quotations, project costs and profitability.
  • Strong customer relationship and stakeholder management skills.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple service projects simultaneously.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant service/project management systems.
  • Willingness to travel onboard vessels, shipyards and customer sites when required.
