Technical Superintendent (Bunker Tankers)

Role Overview

We are seeking a Technical Superintendent to manage the technical performance, maintenance and regulatory compliance of an assigned fleet of bunker tankers. The successful candidate will work closely with vessel crews, class societies, shipyards and service providers to ensure vessels remain safe, reliable and operationally ready.

This position is suitable for a marine engineer with relevant seagoing and shore-based experience involving bunker tankers, product tankers or other oil tankers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the technical operation and maintenance of assigned bunker tankers.
  • Monitor vessel condition, machinery performance, planned maintenance and operational readiness.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to Masters, Chief Engineers and shipboard personnel.
  • Conduct regular vessel inspections and ensure identified deficiencies are rectified promptly.
  • Plan and oversee routine maintenance, major repairs, dry dockings and equipment upgrades.
  • Prepare docking specifications, evaluate quotations and supervise shipyard work through completion.
  • Monitor technical operating budgets, repair expenditure and procurement costs.
  • Review monthly financial performance and explain significant budget variances.
  • Coordinate the procurement and timely delivery of spare parts, equipment and technical services.
  • Manage relationships with shipyards, class societies, flag administrations, equipment manufacturers and service providers.
  • Ensure compliance with class, flag, statutory, IMO, MPA and company requirements.
  • Support vessel preparations for class surveys, audits, inspections and regulatory examinations.
  • Monitor implementation of the Planned Maintenance System and ensure accurate technical records are maintained.
  • Review machinery breakdowns, defects and incidents, conducting root-cause investigations where required.
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to minimise recurrence and vessel downtime.
  • Support compliance with ISM, MARPOL, emissions and environmental requirements.
  • Work closely with marine, operations, HSEQ, crewing and procurement teams to support safe and efficient bunker operations.
  • Monitor vessel performance, fuel consumption, reliability and off-hire trends.
  • Participate in emergency response and provide technical assistance outside normal working hours when necessary.
  • Sail with vessels and travel to shipyards, ports or service locations when required.

Requirements

  • Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, preferably Class 1 or Class 2, or an equivalent recognised marine engineering qualification.
  • Relevant seagoing experience as a Chief Engineer or Second Engineer.
  • Experience aboard bunker tankers, product tankers, chemical tankers or other oil tankers would be advantageous.
  • 3 to 5 years of shore-based experience as a Technical Superintendent would be preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of marine machinery, tanker systems, maintenance practices and technical troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing vessel repairs, dry dockings, surveys and technical budgets.
  • Familiarity with MPA requirements and bunker-tanker operations in Singapore would be advantageous.
  • Good working knowledge of ISM, MARPOL, class and flag-state requirements.
  • Strong budgeting, procurement, vendor-management and cost-control capabilities.
  • Able to manage multiple vessels and respond effectively to urgent technical issues.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and vessel planned-maintenance systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Willing to travel, attend vessels and provide after-hours support when required.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
