Job Description
The Mechatronic Field Technician I supports the safe installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Canrig drilling equipment and integrated electromechanical systems at customer locations. The role applies foundational electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, controls, and field-service skills to restore equipment availability, complete accurate service documentation, and provide professional on-site support while developing proficiency across Canrig product lines.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Mechatronic Equipment Installation & Commissioning
Primary Skills: Electromechanical Systems • Service Installation • System Testing • Drawing Interpretation
- Assist with installation, start-up, function testing, and commissioning of Canrig equipment, software, and integrated electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic subsystems under approved procedures and appropriate technical guidance.
- Read and apply schematics, drawings, service instructions, and equipment specifications to verify connections, settings, component condition, and system readiness.
- Use hand tools, precision measuring devices, and electronic test equipment safely to complete assigned assembly, adjustment, inspection, and repair work.
- Document commissioning results, open items, and equipment condition so work can be reviewed, accepted, and handed over accurately.
Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation Diagnostics
Primary Skills: Electrical Safety • Electronic Test Equipment • Sensor Technology • System Troubleshooting Techniques
- Assist in diagnosing electrical, communications, sensor, actuator, and control-system issues using multimeters, amp probes, meggers, scopes, approved diagnostic software, and established troubleshooting methods.
- Perform assigned testing and minor repair of electrical components up to 600 volts only when trained, authorized, and working under applicable electrical-safety procedures.
- Gather fault history, test results, and operating observations; escalate complex or high-risk conditions to a higher-level technician or engineering support.
- Verify repairs through appropriate function tests and record results in the service report or work order.
HSE, Quality & Operational Readiness
Primary Skills: Safety Protocols • Job Safety Analysis • Quality Control Analysis • Training and Development
- Comply with Nabors and Canrig safety, quality, legal, and operating requirements; participate in pre-job planning, safety meetings, hazard controls, and Stop Work Authority expectations.
- Use required personal protective equipment and follow lockout/tagout, working-at-height, electrical, lifting, driving, and pressure-safety controls applicable to the assigned task.
- Maintain required training, licenses, and safety certifications and attend assigned technical training to build capability across Canrig equipment.
- Provide on-call technical support while assigned to a rotation in accordance with duty-cycle, fatigue-management, and escalation procedures.
Hydraulic & Mechanical Maintenance
Primary Skills: Hydraulic Troubleshooting • Mechanical Equipment Maintenance • Preventative Service • Root Cause Analysis
- Perform assigned preventive and corrective maintenance on hydraulic and mechanical equipment, including inspection, adjustment, component replacement, and basic functional verification.
- Assist with troubleshooting hydraulic components and systems up to 5,000 psi only when trained, authorized, and following energy-isolation and pressure-control requirements.
- Inspect components for wear, leakage, damage, alignment, contamination, or other serviceability concerns and communicate findings promptly.
- Support structured problem identification and root-cause review by collecting evidence, preserving failed parts when required, and documenting recurring conditions
Field Service Execution & Customer Support
Primary Skills: Operational Support • Job Documentation • Customer Complaint Resolution • Time Management
- Execute planned and unplanned field-service work orders at land or offshore customer locations, working independently within demonstrated competence and assisting higher-level technicians when scope or risk requires escalation.
- Serve as a professional on-site contact for assigned work, communicate job status and technical findings clearly, and coordinate with customer and rig personnel without exceeding assigned authority.
- Complete service reports, expense records, billing support, parts usage, and other required paperwork accurately and on time.
- Maintain assigned vehicle, tools, truck stock, and parts inventory in serviceable condition and support readiness for the next field assignment.
Non-Essential Functions
- Support shop repairs, equipment preparation, field audits, product demonstrations, training activities, and service-process improvement work as assigned.
- Share field observations that may identify equipment upgrade, service, reliability, or customer-support opportunities with the appropriate commercial or technical contact.
- Assist with special projects, inventory reviews, technical documentation updates, and lessons-learned activities.
