Job Description
The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full-time Meat Inspection District Supervisor in the Food Safety Division. This position is in state government and will be required to work throughout Oklahoma and reside in one of the following counties: Ottawa, Craig, Nowata, Washington, Osage, Tulsa, Mayes, Rogers, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Creek, Wagoner, Pawnee and Okfuskee.
Compensation
This position has an annual rate of $76,508.00.
As a Meat Inspection District Supervisor, you will enjoy:

Responsibilities:
- Efficiently assign inspectors to provide daily coverage in each inspected meat and poultry processing plant.
- Evaluate and document the job performance of subordinate meat inspectors through the annual performance review process.
- Clearly communicate Agency policies and regulatory requirements to inspection and plant management personnel.
- Ensure that inspection personnel properly evaluate the adequacy and the effectiveness of the Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) in inspected meat and poultry processing plants.
- Ensure that inspection personnel properly evaluate the adequacy and the effectiveness of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans in inspected meat and poultry processing plants.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations and rules, which relate to meat and poultry inspection.
- Accurately complete quarterly reviews of inspected meat and/or poultry establishments as well as custom exempt establishments in a timely fashion.
- Coordinate with Circuit Supervisor to accurately perform scheduled self-certification reviews in both inspected and custom exempt, meat and/or poultry establishments.
Level Descriptor
At this level employees are assigned management level responsibilities involving the direction and supervision of the work activities of assigned areas of responsibilities, programs, or a unit on a regular and consistent basis. This position is assigned primary responsibility for the direction and supervision of assigned staff in completing assigned functions and activities, including reviewing and assigning work, providing training, evaluating performance, approving leave, and initiating disciplinary actions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge is required of procedures for inspecting, evaluating and grading various agricultural commodities; of state and USDA regulations governing the standards and transport of applicable agricultural products; of federal and state laws regarding packaging and other standards related to agricultural products; of environmental and sanitation standards; of materials and equipment used in the applicable agricultural industry; of various types of animal and plant diseases; of record keeping; of basic mathematics including percentages; of English usage; of methods and procedures of processing operations; of the characteristics of applicable agricultural products; of the principles and practices of public administration; of state laws related to the applicable specialty area; of investigative techniques and procedures used to gather and evaluate evidence; of procedures for the inventory, accounting, and storage of agricultural products; of supervisory principles and practices; of program development and implementation; and of office management practices.
Ability is required to conduct inspections related to agricultural products, services, and facilities to determine compliance with established standards, laws and regulations; to follow complex oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to attend to several matters simultaneously; to operate and maintain monitoring and detection equipment; to apply research methodologies; to read and interpret plans and specifications of proposed facilities; to perform a full range of inspections and investigations within the assigned area of specialization; to prepare written reports appropriate for admission to court; to conduct several investigations simultaneously; to train and direct the work of others; to supervise and train others; to exercise independent judgment; to analyze complex situations and adopt an appropriate course of action; and to supervise and direct the work of others.
Education and Experience
The minimum qualifications for this position are:
- A bachelor’s degree in agricultural, biological, plant, animal, physical or natural science, food technology, or closely related field.
- Four years of qualifying inspection experience or administrative experience in an agricultural related field.
- Equivalency/substitution: Will accept an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position, which may require travel to multiple locations within Oklahoma on a daily basis. Applicants must be willing to work hours that may be unusual and outside their normal work week schedule as necessary. While performing the duties of this job, employees may be required to work in extremely hot or cold environments and in areas that require the handling of sharp tools and equipment. Physical demands include occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
Additional Information
This position is required to successfully complete 24 hours of supervisory training during the first year as a supervisor and 12 hours per year thereafter.
