Summary:

The Director, Accounts Receivable provides strategic and operational leadership for hospital accounts receivable performance across assigned clients and facilities. This role is accountable for accelerating cash, reducing preventable denials and aging, improving net revenue realization, and ensuring consistent execution across billing, insurance follow-up, denials and appeals, underpayments, credit balances, and payer escalations.

The Director leads a metrics-driven operating model, translates data into clear priorities and action plans, develops managers and teams, and partners with hospital executives, internal revenue cycle leaders, and vendors to deliver measurable financial and service outcomes. The role also identifies root causes, standardizes effective practices, and advances technology and process improvements that strengthen revenue cycle performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operational leadership: Direct accounts receivable operations across assigned hospitals and clients, including billing, claim edits, insurance follow-up, denials and appeals, underpayments, credit balances, payer escalations, and vendor-supported activities.
  • Performance accountability: Establish targets and operating routines for cash collections, A/R days, aging, denial rate, avoidable write-offs, productivity, quality, and recovery opportunities; monitor results and intervene when performance is off plan.
  • Analytics and action planning: Own recurring revenue cycle reporting and use account-level and trend analysis to identify root causes, quantify financial impact, prioritize work, and implement corrective action plans with defined owners and due dates.
  • Cash and recovery: Lead initiatives to accelerate cash, resolve aged and complex receivables, reduce preventable denials, recover underpayments, and address payer-specific or systemic barriers to reimbursement.
  • Client partnership: Serve as the primary accounts receivable partner to hospital executives and operational leaders; communicate performance, risks, opportunities, commitments, and decisions through concise executive reporting and structured operating reviews.
  • Cross-functional execution: Partner with patient access, health information management, coding, clinical documentation, utilization management, managed care, finance, information technology, compliance, and other stakeholders to resolve upstream and downstream revenue cycle issues.
  • Team leadership: Lead and develop managers and teams through clear expectations, workload prioritization, coaching, performance feedback, succession planning, and accountability for results.
  • Standardization and continuous improvement: Design, implement, and sustain standardized workflows, controls, escalation paths, and best practices while adapting execution to client and facility requirements.
  • Technology and transformation: Support patient accounting system implementations, business office transitions or consolidations, automation, reporting enhancements, and other technology-enabled improvements.
  • Vendor oversight: Evaluate and manage external partners, including collection, eligibility, underpayment, and outsourcing vendors; establish service expectations and monitor financial, operational, quality, and compliance performance.
  • Compliance and controls: Ensure activities follow applicable laws, regulations, payer requirements, contracts, client policies, internal controls, and Ovation Healthcare standards.
  • Perform other duties and lead additional initiatives as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of hospital revenue cycle operations, payer reimbursement, claim adjudication, denials and appeals, underpayments, credit balances, contractual adjustments, and third-party collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve accounts receivable performance through data analysis, disciplined operating routines, root-cause correction, and accountable action plans.
  • Strong financial and analytical capability, including interpretation of A/R aging, cash trends, payer behavior, denial patterns, productivity, quality, and recovery opportunity data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint and the ability to convert complex analysis into concise executive-level reporting and recommendations.
  • Experience with hospital patient accounting and electronic health record platforms; Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, and MEDHOST experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Critical Access Hospital reimbursement and Method I and Method II billing requirements is preferred (Dependent on client-specific engagement).
  • Knowledge of Rural Health Clinic reimbursement methodologies, Medicare and Medicaid billing requirements, provider-based and independent clinic billing practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to lead remote and geographically dispersed teams, manage competing priorities, resolve conflict, and deliver results in a client-service and matrixed environment.
  • Strong written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate with hospital executives, physicians, operational leaders, payers, and vendors.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, discretion, and a willingness to engage directly in complex operational issues when needed.

Work Experience, Education, and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, finance, accounting, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of seven years of progressive hospital revenue cycle experience, including at least three years leading accounts receivable, billing, follow-up, denials, or related business office functions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading managers and teams, managing client or facility relationships, and presenting financial and operational performance to senior executives.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
