Staff Software Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer who is passionate about building scalable, high-quality software and mentoring engineering teams. This role requires a strong hands-on technologist with deep expertise in Ruby on Rails, experience designing distributed systems, and the ability to lead by example in a fast-growing, high-scale environment.

What You’ll Do

· Coach and mentor engineers, helping develop some of the best technical talent in the industry.

· Design, develop, test, release, and maintain core components of PAR/Punchh products.

· Build high-quality, scalable, and reliable software that is widely adopted by customers.

· Architect and scale features to handle 2x–4x annual growth, managing systems with millions of records and terabytes of data.

· Play a key role in technical design and architectural decisions, building toward an efficient microservices-based distributed architecture.

· Drive best practices around code quality, performance, security, and maintainability.

· Take ownership of deliverables and obsess over engineering excellence and craftsmanship.

What You’ll Need

· 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.

· Strong hands-on expertise in Ruby on Rails (mandatory).

· Excellent design and coding skills in:

o Ruby on Rails (must-have)

o Golang

· Experience with Java, C#, or other backend languages is a plus.

· Strong computer science fundamentals, including:

o Design Patterns

o Data Structures & Algorithms

o Operating Systems

· Experience working with large-scale data systems, including both relational and NoSQL databases.

· Proven ability to solve complex technical problems with a hands-on mindset.

· Experience with microservices architecture and platform migration to modern architectures.

· Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS or similar), including:

o Cost optimization

o Multi-region deployments

· Solid understanding of web technologies, including:

o HTTP lifecycle

o REST APIs (hands-on)

o Caching strategies

o Messaging technologies

o API security

· Experience building and scaling large, performant enterprise applications.

· Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
