The posting

Job Description:

POLITICO is looking for an experienced journalist to cover EU climate and energy policy from our Brussels newsroom for our professional and political audience.

Europe is undergoing a profound transition as it attempts to replace fossil fuels with cleaner energy sources. The EU’s 2050 net zero goal requires it to spend trillions on renewables and electricity networks, build new global supply chains, overhaul industrial processes, and shift consumer behaviour and values — all at a time of intense geopolitical instability.

After an initial surge of enthusiasm for the European Green Deal in the early 2020s, the mood has cooled in Europe. Many now regard the EU’s green agenda as a drag on its global economic competitiveness. On the other hand, volatility in global oil and gas markets from the Iran war has reinforced the security argument to switch to homegrown renewables. Meanwhile, the effects of global warming continue to intensify.

The ideal candidate will work as part of a specialist reporting team to break news, author newsletters and write distinctive features on this complex and intensely political beat.

What you’ll do

  • Report on the twists and turns of the big EU policy fights, from attempts to set renewable energy targets and water down emissions rules, to international climate negotiations and efforts to prepare for more extreme weather.
  • Build contacts in the European Commission, Council, Parliament and other EU institutions, as well as industry and civil society.
  • Contribute scoops and insights to the daily Energy & Climate newsletter, which is read by some of Brussels’ most influential policymakers and lobbyists.
  • Write longer stories for our general website and contribute to our global energy newsletter, Surge.

What you’ll need

  • At least five years of reporting experience, including a period covering climate and/or energy.
  • An appetite for scoops, strong news judgment and a nose for a political story.
  • An ability to build sources in hard-to-access places, and use those sources to break news.
  • A collaborative attitude to journalism and enthusiasm for working in a team.
  • Excellent written English.

We value our people

Our benefits package is built for you, and includes:

  • Our teams benefit from country-specific, competitive compensation and benefits packages—including pension, healthcare, training opportunities and more.
  • With a multinational team, strong ties to EU institutions, and flexible work options including working from abroad, we offer our employees an environment that supports both professional and personal development.

About Us

POLITICO illuminates the forces shaping global power. Since 2007, we have delivered intelligence that anticipates tomorrow's headlines, not reports on yesterday's news. As politics has increasingly become the defining force of our era, our work has never been more vital.

Cabinet secretaries and Ministers start their mornings with our analysis. CEOs shape strategy around our reporting. Advocacy leaders rely on our insights to move policy. We deliver the straightforward facts and clear-eyed analysis they need to navigate the most complex political landscape of our lifetimes.

Our 1,100+ publishing professionals across the world's key democratic capitals—Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York—form the world's premier politics and policy newsroom. We tell the story of how power really works by explaining who wields it and how they plan to exercise it, connecting dots others miss and delivering scoops from sources others don't even know exist.

Innovation has always been a core tenet of our story. At launch, we bet that depth would trump scale, that talent would trump traffic, and that politics would become central to modern life. In 2011, we made another bet and launched POLITICO Pro to help decision-makers understand the business of government, transforming both how they shape government action and the business of journalism itself.

These bets have made POLITICO the most successful digital news startup of its generation and the indispensable resource for leaders who shape the future. Today, we are a rarity in media: a growing, profitable, and sustainable news organization.

POLITICO is a subsidiary of Axel Springer SE, a family-owned transatlantic media company headquartered in Berlin and New York. Axel Springer is dedicated to shaping the future of journalism in the free world, believing that a free and informed society is essential to democracy. The company’s guiding principles - first articulated as The Essentials by founder Axel Springer in the aftermath of World War II - remain a cornerstone of the company’s foundation today. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
