Prudent Engineering is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

About the Position

Prudent Engineering, LLP is seeking an experienced Highway Design Project Engineer to support the planning and design of transportation infrastructure projects throughout New York State. This position will play a key technical and project-delivery role on assignments for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the New York State Thruway Authority, municipalities, and other public agencies.

The successful candidate will contribute directly to highway and roadway design, coordinate multidisciplinary project activities, guide junior staff, and help ensure that plans, specifications, estimates, and other deliverables meet client requirements, applicable standards, project schedules, and budgets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and coordinate highway and transportation design assignments from preliminary engineering through final design and construction support.
  • Develop and review roadway plans, profiles, typical sections, alignments, grading, drainage, pavement, guiderail, signing, pavement marking, maintenance and protection of traffic, and related design elements.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, design reports, technical memoranda, quantities, engineer’s estimates, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Apply NYSDOT design criteria, standard specifications, engineering instructions, Highway Design Manual requirements, CADD standards, and other applicable agency guidance.
  • Use Bentley OpenRoads Designer and related Bentley applications to develop and review highway design models and contract plans.
  • Coordinate design activities with bridge, traffic, drainage, environmental, utility, survey, geotechnical, construction, and other project disciplines.
  • Assist project managers with work planning, staffing, schedules, budgets, progress tracking, and client coordination.
  • Identify technical issues and develop practical, constructible, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Perform interdisciplinary reviews and participate in quality-control reviews at established project milestones.
  • Provide technical direction and mentoring to engineers, designers, and CADD staff.
  • Review the work of junior staff for technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Participate in field investigations, project meetings, design reviews, and construction-phase support activities.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, agency representatives, subconsultants, contractors, and internal project teams.
  • Assist with scopes of work, fee estimates, proposals, and interviews when requested.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience working on NYSDOT highway design projects.
  • Familiarity with NYSDOT project-development procedures, design deliverables, CADD standards, specifications, and electronic submission requirements.
  • Experience with Bentley ProjectWise or similar document-management and collaboration platforms.
  • Experience developing 3D roadway models and model-based design deliverables.
  • Experience with public-agency or municipally funded roadway reconstruction, rehabilitation, safety, or complete-streets projects.
  • Experience coordinating utility, drainage, traffic, environmental, and right-of-way considerations.
  • Experience leading design tasks or small project teams and mentoring junior staff.
  • Construction support or construction inspection experience.
  • Familiarity with federal-aid project requirements and applicable FHWA guidance.

What Success Looks Like

  • Producing accurate, complete, and constructible design documents.
  • Consistently meeting project schedules and budgets.
  • Identifying and resolving design issues before they affect project delivery.
  • Communicating clearly with project managers, clients, and other disciplines.
  • Supporting the development of junior engineers and designers.
  • Helping Prudent Engineering deliver responsive service and high-quality transportation projects.

What we offer:

  • Salary Range: $100,000–$130,000 annually.
  • Medical, dental, vision.
  • 401K with company match.
  • PTO plus paid holidays.
  • Unlimited opportunities to advance your career.

*Actual compensation will depend on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, professional licensure, technical capabilities, office location, and other job-related considerations.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
