About Waythrough

Waythrough was formed in 2024 following the merger of Humankind and Richmond Fellowship. Together, we’ve created one of the largest mental health and social support charities in England.

Every year, we support around 125,000 people through nearly 200 services – and it’s all made possible by our 3,500 brilliant staff and volunteers.

Make a real difference in your community

Are you passionate about helping others live safer, healthier, more independent lives? Join our team at Waythrough and support people facing challenges around mental health, substance use, housing or domestic abuse. This is more than just a job – it’s a chance to build meaningful relationships and create lasting change.

About the Role:

We’re excited to offer an opportunity for a Recovery Coordinator to join our team at HMP Northumberland.

This is a rewarding and varied role where you’ll support people in custody who are affected by drug and alcohol use, helping them to engage with treatment and make positive changes throughout their recovery journey.

Taking a person-centred and holistic approach, you’ll provide a range of interventions, from brief interventions and initial assessments through to structured treatment and group-based support.

You’ll work with individuals to understand their needs, strengths and aspirations, developing personalised recovery plans that reflect their individual circumstances and goals.

You’ll manage your own caseload, building positive and trusting relationships with the people you support while helping them address the challenges associated with substance use and develop the skills and confidence needed to sustain their recovery.

Working within a prison environment, you’ll collaborate closely with colleagues, prison staff and external partner agencies to ensure individuals receive coordinated support.

You’ll also play an important role in supporting transitions from custody into the community, helping people access appropriate treatment, services and ongoing recovery support.

Every day brings an opportunity to make a difference, helping people recognise their potential, overcome barriers and take positive steps towards a healthier and more independent future.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manage an allocated caseload, developing, implementing and regularly reviewing personalised recovery and treatment plans.
  • Carry out triage, screening and comprehensive assessments to identify individual needs, strengths, risks and recovery goals.
  • Deliver a range of person-centred interventions, including brief interventions, structured treatment and group-based support.
  • Support individuals at different stages of their recovery journey, from initial engagement through to structured treatment and sustained recovery.
  • Build positive, trusting and professional relationships that encourage engagement and support meaningful change.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, prison staff and partner agencies to coordinate effective support and promote positive outcomes.
  • Take a holistic approach to recovery, recognising the wider factors that can affect an individual's health, wellbeing and ability to make positive changes.
  • Support individuals to access appropriate treatment, health, wellbeing, housing, education, employment and community resources.
  • Promote recovery and social inclusion, helping individuals build positive relationships, develop resilience and increase their recovery capital.
  • Support individuals to prepare for key transitions, including transfer or release from custody, ensuring appropriate onward referrals and continuity of care.
  • Work closely with community-based services and partner agencies to support individuals as they move towards recovery outside the prison environment.
  • Complete and regularly review risk assessments, risk management plans and safeguarding assessments, responding appropriately to changes in risk or individual circumstances.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, escalating issues in line with organisational and service procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and confidential records using online case management systems.
  • Work in line with relevant policies, procedures and professional standards, including confidentiality, data protection and information sharing.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive and inclusive team environment, sharing knowledge and working collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for the people we support.

What You’ll Bring:

We’re looking for someone who is compassionate, motivated and passionate about supporting people to make positive changes in their lives.

You’ll ideally have experience of working with people affected by drug and/or alcohol use, or supporting individuals with complex needs, alongside an understanding of the challenges people can face when accessing treatment and recovery services.

You’ll also bring:

  • A genuine interest in being part of Waythrough’s mission and vision.
  • Experience of working or volunteering with vulnerable adults or individuals with complex needs, ideally within substance use, health or social care services.
  • An understanding of drug and alcohol use, addiction, recovery and the barriers individuals may face.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage people in a non-judgemental and supportive way.
  • The ability to build trusting relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Experience of completing assessments, developing support plans and managing an allocated caseload.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partner agencies to deliver coordinated support.
  • An understanding of safeguarding, risk assessment and risk management, with the ability to identify and respond appropriately to concerns.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise your workload effectively.
  • The ability to maintain accurate records and confidently use IT-based systems for case management.
  • A flexible and resilient approach, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a challenging environment.
  • A commitment to promoting dignity, respect, choice, equality and independence.

Desirable:

Experience of delivering psychosocial interventions, such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or other evidence-based approaches. Experience of facilitating group work would also be beneficial.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who genuinely wants to make a difference – someone who can see the person beyond their circumstances, recognise their potential and support them to build a positive future.

This experience could come from paid employment, volunteering or other relevant experience.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
