About the role

We are looking for a Principal Adviser, Incentive Design to shape how business performance and value creation are translated into short and long term reward across Rio Tinto. Working at the intersection of reward, business performance, finance and strategy, you will tackle complex questions around design parameters, performance measures, target setting, incentive economics, differentiation and risk to develop frameworks that work across a diverse global business.

Success in this role requires deep incentive and performance expertise, supported by strong commercial, financial and analytical capability. This experience may have been developed through reward and remuneration, finance, strategy or performance management.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the General Manager Reward Strategy and working across the Reward function and broader business, you will:

  • Translate enterprise strategy and financial and operational value drivers into short and long term incentive frameworks, scorecards, performance measures and targets that drive sustainable value creation.
  • Lead the design and governance of short-term, long-term, retention, achievement and engagement award programs.
  • Lead the design and calibration of performance measures, scorecards, targets and payout curves, bringing together strategic ambition, business performance, external expectations and appropriate stretch.
  • Lead financial modelling, scenario and sensitivity analysis to assess the cost, risk, value-creation and performance implications of alternative incentive designs.
  • Establish enterprise incentive design standards, funding methodologies and governance principles, assessing intended and unintended behaviours and ensuring appropriate alignment between performance, risk and sustainable value creation.
  • Evaluate whether incentive programs are delivering their intended business, performance, talent and behavioural outcomes, using evidence and external insight to continuously evolve their design.
  • Shape how our incentive programs are understood and experienced, bringing together technical expertise and compelling storytelling to translate complex program design, performance and scorecard outcomes for leaders, HR and employees.
  • Monitor how in-flight incentives are performing and responsible for providing periodic updates and analysis to participants and other stakeholders, including Board committees
  • Monitor market competitiveness, investor expectations and regulatory developments to inform incentive strategy and program evolution.
  • Partner with broader Reward team, business partners, Communications, Finance, Strategy, Legal, Risk and Compliance to shape and align enterprise incentive design and implementation.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply. If you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Incentive & Performance Design: Experience designing incentive, performance or value creation frameworks that translate strategy into measurable outcomes.
  • Commercial & Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of value drivers, performance measures, scorecards, target setting and incentive economics.
  • Strategic & Analytical Capability: Strong analytical and modelling capability to assess scenarios, trade-offs, risks and incentive effectiveness.
  • Enterprise Design: Ability to translate complex business objectives into clear enterprise frameworks, principles and decision rules.
  • Stakeholder Leadership: Ability to influence senior leaders and navigate complex decisions across Finance, Strategy, People, Risk, Legal and the business.
  • Ability to distill the complex into easily consumable participant material, increasing knowledge and understanding of, and engagement with, the incentive programs.
  • Relevant Background: Experience in reward, finance, business performance, strategy, commercial analytics or a related discipline, with strong performance and incentive design capability.

Helpful for Success

  • Experience supporting executive, Board or Remuneration Committee decision-making and governance.
  • Understanding of investor, regulatory and market considerations influencing incentive design and pay-for-performance outcomes.
  • Exposure to enterprise performance management, financial planning or strategic scorecard design.
  • Experience working across global organisations, using data and modelling to balance enterprise principles, business outcomes and local requirements.

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
