Collins Aerospace, a Raytheon Technologies company, is a world leader in advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defence industries. With a comprehensive inertial sensing and integrated navigation technology portfolio and deep domain expertise, we deliver cutting-edge systems that solve our customers’ toughest stabilisation, flight control and navigation challenges and help shape the future of aviation and defence.

This is a hybrid role based at our Plymouth site, where we design and manufacture control, navigation, and guidance systems for both air and surface applications. Our world-class products include MEMS-based Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and the TERPROM® Digital Terrain Reference Navigation System.

Our growth plan includes development and extension of our current technologies into state of the art military and civil aircraft applications and we’re looking for exceptional engineers to join us on that journey.

As a Systems Engineer, you’ll support the development, integration and validation of complex embedded systems. Working across hardware, software and mechanical domains, you’ll contribute to projects from concept through to delivery, developing your technical knowledge and practical systems engineering skills while working alongside experienced engineers.

What You Will Do

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Working with our customers and key stakeholders to support the understanding, capture and documentation of system-level use cases, concepts of operations and requirements, with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Interfacing with stakeholders across Systems, Software, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and supporting the development and documentation of requirement specifications for each component of the system.
  • Supporting system integration for real-time embedded systems, including hardware/software interfaces, and gaining practical experience in integration activities.
  • Supporting the maintenance of requirement-to-requirement and requirements-to-test traceability throughout the design.
  • Assisting with the development of test cases and procedures against requirements and executing tests in accordance with defined test plans and procedures.
  • Applying logical and innovative problem-solving across software, hardware and system levels, seeking technical guidance when resolving more complex engineering challenges.

What You Will Learn

At Collins Aerospace, your career development is as important as our technical innovation. You’ll benefit from:

  • Exposure to cutting-edge navigation and sensing technologies.
  • Mentorship and training from industry-leading experts.
  • Opportunities to work on mission-critical systems used globally.
  • A supportive environment that encourages continuous learning and career progression.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • An understanding of the systems engineering development lifecycle, gained through academic study, placements, graduate programmes or relevant industry experience.
  • Awareness of requirements analysis and the principles of requirements capture and management.
  • Knowledge of test plans, test cases and procedures and an understanding of verification and validation activities.
  • Awareness of requirements management tools such as DOORS (or Jama or similar).
  • Awareness of version control systems (SVN, Git, Teamwork Cloud).

Skills & Experience We Value

  • Familiarity with SysML tools such as Enterprise Architect (or Cameo) is preferred.
  • An understanding of basic data analysis techniques.
  • Awareness of Control Systems Engineering.
  • Awareness of Digital Signal Processing.
  • Familiarity with platforms that utilise inertial sensors and associated requirements.
  • Exposure to COTS test equipment in a lab environment (oscilloscopes, bus analysers, etc.).
  • Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop testing.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • Excellent 2:1 matched pension contribution (up to 10%).
  • Private healthcare and life assurance.
  • 25 days annual leave plus the option to buy or sell up to 5 days.
  • Early finish Fridays and a culture that values work life balance.
  • Ongoing career development, mentorship, and world class training.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
