Job Description

Turn your laboratory expertise into someone else’s confidence.

Know your way around a geochemistry laboratory and enjoy helping others master their craft? Join SGS as a Technical Trainer and put your hands-on experience to work developing laboratory teams. Based at Perth Airport, with regular travel to sites, you’ll help people build the skills, confidence and technical capability to deliver safe, consistent and reliable results.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Technical & Quality Manager, you’ll bring technical learning to life through practical demonstrations, coaching and workplace competency assessments. From sample preparation to analytical instrumentation, you’ll support new starters and experienced team members, strengthen everyday laboratory practices and help teams adopt new methods, equipment and technology.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver hands-on training across sample receipt, preparation, digestion, fusion and dispatch, reinforcing safe, accurate techniques at every stage.
  • Build practical capability in ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF, LECO, AAS and other analytical instruments, covering operation, routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Create engaging training resources, refresher programs and competency assessments, and maintain accurate training records and matrices.
  • Coach and mentor laboratory personnel, assess workplace competency and tailor training to identified development needs.
  • Partner with laboratory, technical and quality teams to support onboarding, introduce new equipment and methods, and address capability gaps.
  • Visit sites to deliver training, demonstrate equipment and assess competency against approved procedures.
  • Reinforce safety, contamination control, data integrity, traceability and QA/QC practices in line with SGS procedures, ISO 9001 and applicable ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
  • Contribute to procedure improvements, investigations, corrective actions and targeted retraining to strengthen laboratory performance.

Qualifications

What you’ll bring

  • Relevant scientific or laboratory qualifications, with a minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in a commercial geochemistry laboratory.
  • A strong practical grounding in sample handling and preparation, including drying, crushing, pulverising, milling, splitting, subsampling, filter pressing and weighing.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical instruments such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF, LECO and AAS, including routine operation, basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience training, coaching or mentoring laboratory operators or technical teams, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and demonstrate good practice.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, QA/QC, quality procedures, ISO 9001 and applicable ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
  • Strong organisation, attention to detail and computer literacy, particularly when managing technical documentation, training records and competency tracking.
  • Experience in wet chemistry techniques is desirable.
  • Regular travel to sites is a requirement of the role.

Why this role?

  • Make your expertise count: help laboratory teams develop practical skills they can use every day.
  • Stay close to the science: work across sample preparation, analytical instrumentation and new laboratory technology.
  • Make an impact across sites: combine hands-on coaching with improvements in safety, quality and consistency.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
