Job description

At Shionogi, we are committed to improving global health through innovation, collaboration and high-quality science. Our Medical Affairs teams build trusted partnerships with healthcare professionals and ensure meaningful scientific exchange that supports informed clinical practice and optimal patient care. We are now seeking a Medical Science Liaison, Hospital Italy to join our Medical Affairs team. This field-based role will serve as an important connection between the external medical community and Shionogi, bringing scientific insight into the organisation while sharing relevant medical and product knowledge with healthcare professionals.

Why Join Shionogi? Shionogi offers a purpose-driven, agile and collaborative environment where employees are empowered to make a meaningful impact. This role provides the opportunity to develop trusted relationships with healthcare professionals and Key Opinion Leaders, build deep therapeutic-area expertise and contribute to patient management and future product launches within the hospital setting.

About the Role As Medical Science Liaison, Hospital Italy, you will be a key customer-facing member of the Medical Affairs team. You will conduct high-level scientific and medical exchange with healthcare professionals, act as a therapy-area and product expert, and provide a two-way flow of insight between external stakeholders and Shionogi. Working independently in the field and collaboratively across the Italian and European organisation, you will support medical activities, cross-functional priorities and internal capability building. You will also engage hospital stakeholders and contribute to the development of patient-care pathways for future launches. A Summary of Key Responsibilities Includes:

Scientific & Medical Engagement

  • Act as the field-based face of Medical Affairs and conduct high-quality scientific and medical exchange with healthcare professionals.
  • Establish and develop trusted relationships with Healthcare Professionals and Key Opinion Leaders in relevant therapeutic areas.
  • Bring external medical and scientific insights into Shionogi and support strong relationships at both country and European levels.

Therapy-Area & Product Expertise

  • Build and maintain deep expertise in the relevant therapy area and the scientific data supporting Shionogi products.
  • Stay current with advances in relevant disease areas, competitor medicines and the wider treatment landscape.
  • Critically appraise scientific publications, search for relevant evidence and translate complex data into clear scientific summaries.

Medical & Cross-Functional Support

  • Support Medical Affairs activities in Italy, including complex medical and scientific enquiries where required.
  • Work cross-functionally with colleagues across the country and wider European organisation to support shared goals appropriately.
  • Provide therapy-area and product training to internal colleagues.
  • Support appropriate scientific and medical activity that enables wider business objectives while maintaining Medical Affairs independence and compliance.

Hospital & Patient Pathway Engagement

  • Engage with hospital stakeholders to support optimal patient management.
  • Contribute scientific insight to the development of patient-care pathways for future product launches.
  • Consider issues from both the healthcare-professional and patient perspective when shaping medical engagement.

What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for a scientifically credible, ethical and adaptable Medical Affairs professional who can work independently while building strong relationships across the healthcare community and the wider organisation. You will communicate complex science clearly, demonstrate maturity in external interactions and remain flexible as priorities and business needs evolve.

You Will Bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in pharmacy, biology or medicine, subject to applicable country requirements.
  • A PhD or other relevant postgraduate qualification is desirable.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as an MSL or in clinical research within Medical Affairs.
  • Experience in antibiotics, infectious diseases or haematology.
  • Experience working as an MSL in specialty-care or hospital-drug environments.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with sales teams while maintaining appropriate Medical Affairs standards.
  • The ability to critically appraise publications and search for, synthesise and summarise scientific data.
  • A strong understanding of the Italian pharmaceutical industry, healthcare environment and applicable rules for promotional and non-promotional activities.
  • Existing relationships with relevant Key Opinion Leaders, experience in both large and small or mid-sized pharmaceutical companies, and an understanding of health economics are desirable.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 70% within the assigned territory.

How You Work

  • You demonstrate ethical and honest behaviour and act in accordance with local requirements and Shionogi compliance standards.
  • You build credibility through scientific expertise, clear communication and strong presentation skills.
  • You show maturity and professional judgement in interactions with healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
  • You are flexible and adaptable, including when priorities and business needs change.
  • You are comfortable working independently for extended periods and adapting your schedule when required.
  • You remain patient-focused and committed to high-quality, non-promotional scientific exchange.

Join us if you are motivated by translating science into meaningful dialogue, building trusted partnerships across the hospital community and supporting better outcomes for patients, we would welcome your application.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
