US Tax Manager

Sierra Forensic Group (SFG) Business Unit: Tax Services Position: Tax Manager

Position Summary

The Tax Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day delivery, quality, and workflow of SFG’s tax practice. This is a hands-on working manager role that combines tax return preparation, technical review, client management, staff supervision, and practice operations.

The Tax Manager will personally prepare complex and higher-risk tax returns while also reviewing returns prepared by other team members. The individual should be capable of independently managing tax engagements from initial document collection and preparation through review, client communication, filing, and completion.

The Tax Manager is expected to balance production responsibilities with management responsibilities and proactively allocate work based on complexity, staff capabilities, capacity, and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Preparation, Compliance & Technical Review

Personally prepare complex federal, state, and local tax returns, including individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, trust, estate, and other applicable returns. Prepare and review complex individual returns involving K-1s, pass-through entities, multi-state filings, Schedule C businesses, investments, rental activities, and high-income taxpayers. Prepare and review business tax returns and related shareholder or partner reporting. Prepare and review fiduciary income tax returns and related accounting information. Prepare extensions, estimated tax calculations, projections, and related tax schedules. Prepare tax workpapers and supporting calculations for complex or judgmental tax positions. Review tax returns prepared by associates and other tax professionals. Determine which engagements should be prepared personally and which should be delegated based on complexity, risk, staff experience, and workload. Identify tax issues, planning opportunities, inconsistencies, and missing information before returns are finalized. Research technical tax matters and document conclusions when necessary. Monitor changes in federal and state tax laws affecting SFG clients. Ensure tax positions are adequately supported and consistent with applicable tax law and professional standards.

Review & Quality Control

Perform detailed technical review of returns prepared by staff. Confirm source documents, workpapers, tax returns, and supporting schedules reconcile appropriately. Review prior-year returns and investigate significant or unusual year-over-year changes. Ensure appropriate review procedures and checklists are completed before returns are delivered to clients. Reduce errors, amended returns, notices, and unnecessary rework. Establish and maintain standardized tax preparation and review procedures across SFG.

Staff Management & Development

Supervise tax associates, preparers, and other professionals assigned to tax engagements. Assign work based on experience, capacity, complexity, and deadlines. Review staff work and provide timely, specific feedback. Train staff on tax preparation, documentation, SFG procedures, and tax technology. Monitor staff productivity, quality, deadlines, and workload. Identify recurring errors or knowledge gaps and implement appropriate training. Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and evaluating tax personnel as the practice grows.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or related field. CPA or EA strongly preferred. Approximately 5–8+ years of progressive tax experience, including substantial hands-on preparation and review experience. Prior experience supervising tax professionals. Strong experience preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns. Experience with partnerships, S corporations, multi-state taxation, and complex individual returns. Experience with fiduciary/trust taxation preferred. Strong tax research and analytical skills. Experience with professional tax preparation software; ProConnect Tax experience preferred. Strong understanding of QuickBooks and financial statements. Excellent written and verbal client communication skills. Strong organizational and project-management skills.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
