Want your next career move to give you greater responsibility, direct access to decision-makers and work that makes a real impact?
At Smart Energy, we’re helping Australians unlock their home’s potential through solar, batteries, hot water heat pumps, EV chargers and more. Backed by Rinnai Australia, we’re building the future of home electrification - and we need great people to help drive it.
We’re looking for a sharp, proactive Paralegal ready to take ownership of legal support and compliance coordination across our national business.
Your work will help our leaders make informed decisions, our teams navigate challenges and our business move forward with confidence.
The Opportunity 🚀
Reporting directly to our Executive Leadership Team (ELT), you’ll work under the legal supervision and guidance of our in-house lawyer.
Working alongside our Compliance Manager, you will be setting priorities, driving accountability and ensuring important actions reach the finish line.
From commercial contracts and customer disputes to policies and regulatory changes, you’ll work across matters that influence how we operate every day.
This is a role for someone who enjoys responsibility, asks thoughtful questions and turns complex information into clear, practical next steps.
What You'll Do
- Move legal matters forward: Research issues, prepare documents and coordinate the information our lawyer needs to advise the business.
- Lead compliance priorities: Work alongside our compliance manager, establish clear actions and drive follow-through.
- Help resolve disputes: Gather evidence, prepare correspondence under legal supervision and coordinate customer complaints and disputes through to resolution.
- Keep leadership informed: Give the ELT clear updates on progress, outstanding actions and matters requiring attention.
- Strengthen how we operate: Help develop and maintain practical policies, procedures and compliance records.
- Support regulatory readiness: Monitor relevant developments and work with our lawyer and Compliance Manager to implement required changes.
- Build better systems: Improve legal templates, document management and contract registers so information is accurate, accessible and up to date.
- Connect the business: Work with teams across Smart Energy to coordinate legal queries and escalate matters appropriately.
You Must Have
- A completed law degree or equivalent, with Practical Legal Training underway or completed, or admission as an Australian lawyer.
- At least 3 years’ relevant paralegal or legal experience, ideally within commercial law or an in-house legal team.
Key Skills & Attributes
- Practical experience preparing and reviewing commercial contracts under a lawyer’s supervision.
- Experience supporting consumer complaints, disputes and compliance matters.
- Previous experience supervising staff or coordinating the work of others.
- Strong legal research, writing and document preparation skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Sound judgement, discretion and confidence recognising when to escalate matters to our lawyer.
- The ability to communicate clearly with senior leaders and colleagues across the business.
- Availability to work onsite in Byron Bay, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.
Why Smart Energy? ☀️
- Responsibility you can grow with - Take ownership of meaningful work, oversee a direct report and contribute to the way our legal and compliance functions operate.
- Work closely with the people making decisions. Report directly to the ELT and see how your work supports the direction of a national business.
- Build your commercial legal experience. Work under our in-house Smart Energy / Rinnai lawyer across a broad range of business matters.
- Be part of Australia’s energy transition. Help support a business making solar, batteries and home electrification accessible to more Australians.
