The posting
Big migration, real stakes, your judgment at the centre.
Hi! We're Smartsourcing, and we're hiring a full-time, onsite Senior Data Engineer. You'll be the one who keeps a business's data flowing and trusted, and who leads it onto a modern platform.
Where? JEG Tower, Archbishop Reyes, Corner Acacia St., Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City, 6000 Cebu
About the Role
You'll be the primary in-house data engineer for a retail business, owning the SQL Server, SSIS, Snowflake, and BI environments end to end. The first 90 days are about stable, uninterrupted operation: monitoring ETL jobs, tracing failures through a large estate of stored procedures, and taking over through a structured handover. After that, you'll drive the modernisation, migrating workloads from SQL Server to Snowflake alongside an external implementation partner and moving BI reporting from QlikView to Power BI. You'll need the depth to validate the partner's approach and challenge it where needed, and to weigh the downstream impact of every technical decision. You'll work Australian Eastern business hours and explain data issues clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
SSIS ETL Development & Job Monitoring
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance the SSIS packages that move data between core systems.
- Monitor scheduled ETL jobs daily, identify failures, determine root cause, and fix or rerun affected jobs promptly.
- Trace data issues end to end across SSIS packages and stored procedures to pinpoint where data is failing into downstream applications.
- Build resilience, validation checks, and data-accuracy controls into all ETL processes and data streams.
- Optimise ETL performance and progressively transition ETL processes from SQL Server to Snowflake pipelines.
SQL Server Database Development & Administration
- Develop, maintain, and optimise T-SQL stored procedures, views, and functions supporting enterprise applications and reporting.
- Build working knowledge of the existing stored procedure estate, and document its logic and dependencies.
- Perform DBA duties, including indexing strategies and query performance tuning for high-volume transactional and analytical workloads.
- Implement and monitor database backup, recovery, and security policies to meet compliance and business-continuity requirements.
- Advise on the appropriate use of SQL Server versus Snowflake for each workload, considering cost, performance, and accessibility.
Snowflake Administration & Data Migration
- Administer and configure Snowflake as the central data platform, including data models, schemas, security, and cost governance, with the IT Infrastructure team.
- Migrate legacy datasets, ETL processes, and workloads from SQL Server to Snowflake, working alongside the external implementation partner.
- Review the partner's designs and deliverables, and raise risks or issues where approaches do not fit the environment.
- Validate and reconcile migrated data for accuracy, integrity, and completeness, documenting processes for audit and reuse.
- Minimise downtime and business disruption during cut-over, and ensure resilience and disaster recovery across Snowflake environments.
Business Intelligence & Reporting
- Maintain and support existing QlikView dashboards and Power BI reports, ensuring data accuracy, performance, and availability.
- Support the migration of QlikView reporting into Power BI, rebuilding dashboards to agreed standards.
- Engage stakeholders to capture reporting needs, translate them into technical requirements, and deliver interactive dashboards and reports.
- Apply data governance, role-based access, and visualisation best practices to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
Systems Integration
- Contribute to integrating loyalty, POS, eCommerce, and third-party partner systems into the data ecosystem.
- Maintain secure, reliable data exchange processes and consistent data flows between transactional, analytical, and reporting systems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve integration issues with minimal business disruption.
- Recommend the most appropriate integration approach (API, ETL, direct connection, or middleware) based on the role and criticality of the data.
Data Engineering & Automation
- Write optimised SQL for complex data extraction, transformation, and analysis.
- Build scripts and tools to automate data workflows, quality checks, and reporting processes.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and improve repeatability across the data environment.
Stakeholder Support, Handover & Documentation
- Complete a structured handover and take full ownership of the data environment.
- Act as the primary data contact for IT, Master Data, Marketing, and Operations teams, and respond to end-user data and reporting queries.
- Communicate data issues, business impact, and resolutions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Maintain documentation and runbooks for SSIS packages, stored procedures, and data flows.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness and Digital Enablement
- Maintain baseline AI literacy and use approved AI tools responsibly, in line with company policies, data privacy, information security, and client confidentiality obligations.
- Apply sound judgment by validating outputs and avoiding overreliance, ensuring accuracy and accountability in all work delivered.
- Participate in AI readiness trainings and proactively identify opportunities for process improvement through automation and responsible AI integration.

- Deep, hands-on SSIS package development and troubleshooting

Skills & Behaviours
