Our facility operates 25 advanced instruments and is expanding with the addition of a BD FACSDiscover S8, BD FACSDiscover A8, and a second Thermo Fisher Bigfoot cell sorter. This position will focus heavily on providing cell sorting services while supporting researchers with flow cytometry experiments, high-parameter panel design, and technical troubleshooting.

We are seeking candidates with experience in flow cytometry, cell sorting, or high-parameter panel design who are interested in expanding their technical expertise. Previous experience operating a cell sorter is strongly preferred but not required, as specialized training will be provided. Above all, we value exceptional interpersonal skills, professionalism, accountability, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed. This is an opportunity to develop advanced cytometry expertise while helping shape a collaborative, supportive, and service-oriented team that contributes to the life-saving research conducted at St. Jude. As a Associate Scientist in the FCCSSR, you will play a central role in providing cell sorting services and technical support to researchers across the institution. Job Duties:

  • Perform routine and complex cell sorting services, including instrument setup, sample preparation, experimental optimization, troubleshooting, and post-sort quality assessment.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to researchers, demonstrating patience, professionalism, empathy, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.
  • Work directly with researchers to understand their experimental objectives, assist with experimental planning, and provide guidance on sample preparation, fluorophore selection, high-parameter panel design, and appropriate controls.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot advanced flow cytometry instruments, including cell sorters and analyzers, with increasing independence as specialized training is completed.
  • Assist researchers with flow cytometry data analysis, compensation, spectral unmixing, and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Take ownership of assigned instruments or operational responsibilities, including quality control, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication of instrument-related issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on training to researchers and less-experienced team members as expertise develops.
  • Collaborate with facility staff to coordinate cell sorting reservations, manage competing priorities, and ensure reliable and timely service delivery.
  • Contribute to improvements in facility workflows, standard operating procedures, training materials, and the overall researcher experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates should have demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas: flow cytometry, cell sorting, or high-parameter fluorescence panel design. Previous experience operating a cell sorter is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Understanding of fluorescence, compensation or spectral unmixing, experimental controls, and flow cytometry data interpretation.
  • Strong customer service orientation, with demonstrated ability to communicate professionally, build positive relationships, and support researchers with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex scientific problems, work independently, and take ownership of responsibilities through resolution.
  • Experience with spectral flow cytometry, high-dimensional data analysis, or multiparameter experimental design is beneficial.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or providing technical guidance to researchers or colleagues is preferred.

Professional Development Opportunities

  • The FCCSSR offers extensive opportunities to expand technical expertise across a diverse portfolio of advanced cell sorters and flow cytometry analyzers. Team members will receive specialized training on multiple instrument platforms and have opportunities to develop expertise in complex cell sorting applications, high-parameter panel design, spectral flow cytometry, and data analysis.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
