Job Description

Learning begins in the classroom but there’s no better place to gain real-world experience than with Stantec. Interns are an integral part of our teams, working to solve some of the world's most complex challenges.

As an intern, you’ll work alongside our experienced practitioners and with our clients and communities. This hands-on experience will equip you with practical skills, build your network, and provide opportunities that set you up for success.

Many of the world’s top engineers and scientists come together in our Water business because they view a community’s interaction with water a bit differently—as a single holistic system, rather than unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. Working throughout the hydrologic cycle, we are delivering sustainable solutions to make sure water is where it should be and available when needed. Our experts guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Every day, we help communities improve, reuse, and protect this precious resource for future generations. Grow with us, H2O+U.

Do you want to be part of a collaborative team that puts people first, lives its corporate values, and works on some of the most challenging water projects in the world? Join us.

Your Opportunity

Our Phoenix, Arizona office is seeking a Process Engineering Intern to join our multidisciplinary team of water professionals. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience supporting water and wastewater treatment projects across Arizona and the Southwest. You will work in a supportive team environment alongside engineers, designers, and technical specialists while learning about process evaluation, planning, design, and construction. Project exposure may include water and wastewater treatment facilities, water reuse systems, pipelines, and pump stations. You will also have opportunities to collaborate with Stantec team members throughout the United States and connect with our global technical expertise.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support local and virtual project teams in preparing high-quality work products for water and wastewater clients under the guidance of experienced staff. Tasks may include basic engineering calculations, process data review, preparation of design drawings, technical memoranda, and development of equipment or process documentation.
  • Assist process engineers and technical specialists with evaluations of water and wastewater treatment alternatives, unit processes, equipment, and facility improvements.
  • Apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects involving treatment facilities, water reuse systems, pump stations, pipelines, and related infrastructure.
  • Help organize, review, and summarize technical information, field data, laboratory data, and operating records.
  • Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and coordination with engineers, designers, and other disciplines.
  • Support site visits, condition assessments, field investigations, and construction observations, as needed.
  • Learn and apply Stantec design standards, quality procedures, and commonly used process engineering tools.
  • Develop knowledge of sustainable and resilient water solutions relevant to communities in Phoenix and throughout Arizona.
  • Prepare clear calculations, figures, tables, meeting notes, and presentation materials with guidance from project staff.
  • Communicate questions, progress, and findings effectively with project team members.
  • Seek feedback, build technical skills, and contribute positively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Participate in local professional, university, and water-industry events when opportunities are available.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Basic understanding of process, mechanical, civil, environmental, chemical, or related engineering concepts.
  • Interest in water and wastewater treatment, water reuse, or related infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Exposure to AutoCAD, MicroStation, data analysis, modeling, or related engineering software is helpful but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, ask questions, receive feedback, and manage assigned tasks.
  • Attention to detail and an interest in preparing clear, organized technical work products.

Education and Experience

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical, environmental, civil, mechanical, or a related engineering field at an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of foundational engineering coursework; coursework in water or wastewater treatment, fluid mechanics, environmental engineering, chemistry, or process design is preferred.
  • Previous internship, laboratory, research, design-team, or related project experience is helpful but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for travel to project sites in the Phoenix metropolitan area and elsewhere in Arizona.

This position will involve a typical office environment working with computers. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Staff may also opt to work a portion of their time at home.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
