About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Tax Director to lead tax planning, compliance, and advisory engagements for privately held businesses and their owners. This leadership role focuses on providing strategic tax guidance to closely held companies, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, and individual business owners while overseeing complex client engagements, developing team members, and supporting business growth. The ideal candidate brings extensive public accounting experience, strong technical tax expertise, and a passion for delivering exceptional client service and mentoring professionals.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical reviews of complex tax returns and engagement workpapers for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, and privately held businesses.
  • Provide strategic tax planning and advisory services related to business and personal transactions, including evaluating tax implications and compliance requirements.
  • Respond to IRS and state tax authority examinations, notices, audits, and other regulatory inquiries.
  • Lead multiple complex tax engagements while managing budgets, staffing, scheduling, workflow, and overall engagement profitability.
  • Conduct advanced tax research on complex federal, state, and local tax matters and prepare technical memorandums supporting tax positions.
  • Develop trusted client relationships and identify opportunities to expand tax advisory and consulting services.
  • Drive business development initiatives by identifying new client opportunities and expanding services for existing clients.
  • Allocate engagement resources effectively to ensure quality service delivery and efficient project execution.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop managers, supervisors, and staff through technical training, performance management, and career development.
  • Stay current on changes in tax legislation and communicate technical updates and best practices to tax professionals across the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA, JD, or Enrolled Agent credential with authorization to practice before the IRS.
  • Minimum of 8 years of public accounting tax experience or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of leadership experience managing client engagements and developing tax professionals.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws affecting individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, and privately held businesses.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex engagements while maintaining exceptional client relationships.
  • Advanced analytical, leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to perform advanced tax research and provide practical, strategic recommendations.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment with in office collaboration approximately half of the time.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related discipline.
  • Subject matter expertise in a specialized area of taxation.
  • Experience advising privately held businesses and business owners on tax planning, entity structuring, and succession planning.
  • Proven success developing client relationships and supporting business development initiatives.
  • Strong presentation, technical writing, and thought leadership skills.
  • Experience mentoring and developing tax professionals through coaching and technical training.
