The posting

*English description below*

TandemLaunch is looking for a Head of Research to join the founding team of an early-stage deep tech startup coming out of our venture studio. We're building a physical reservoir computing front-end for analog AI: a small, tunable analog block that sits between a sensor and an AI accelerator and extracts noise-robust, training-free features directly from the sensor's analog signal.

Today, sensor signals are digitized and preprocessed (ADC, FFT, Mel-spectrogram) before reaching the inference layer and that conditioning chain often uses more power than the inference itself. We're replacing it with a physical reservoir that absorbs sensor noise into useful nonlinear dynamics and hands clean, high-dimensional features straight to an analog AI accelerator or a microcontroller, without an ADC at the input.

About TandemLaunch

TandemLaunch is a Canadian venture studio that builds technology companies out of cutting-edge university research, focused on sensing systems, advanced materials, wireless technology, computer vision, and edge AI.

The Role

This is a founding, equity-bearing position. You'll work closely with our circuit and MEMS engineers to turn a genuinely new computing approach into a business that customers pay for.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Owning the science

  • Lead the research roadmap for physical reservoir computing across electronic hardware, MEMS, and other analog implementations.
  • Model and characterize reservoir dynamics: nonlinearity, memory capacity, feature separation, and robustness to noise across operating regimes.
  • Develop the theory and benchmarking framework that explains why the reservoir works, so the results hold up outside our own lab.

Proving it against the alternatives

  • Design experiments and benchmarks that show where physical reservoirs beat conventional signal-conditioning front-ends, especially at low signal-to-noise ratios.
  • Extend the platform from audio to vibration, pressure, biosignals, and high-speed signal paths such as nonlinear channel equalization.

Turning physics into product

  • Work with the engineering team on the circuits and devices behind the platform, translating the physics into manufacturable specifications for bias, forcing, and readout.
  • Define how reservoir outputs interface with analog AI accelerators and in-memory compute fabrics.
  • Help scope what integration into silicon and into existing MEMS microphone supply chains requires.

Founder-level work

  • Work with TandemLaunch and counsel on the IP strategy: extending existing filings and identifying new ones.
  • Contribute to fundraising: technical sections of investor materials and technical due diligence.
  • Be a credible, direct voice with early customers, integration partners, and the research community, and help recruit the rest of the technical team.

What We're Looking For

  • A PhD in physics, applied physics, nonlinear dynamics, or a closely related field.
  • Deep research experience in physical reservoir computing, neuromorphic hardware, or nonlinear dynamical systems, ideally with publications or patents in photonic, electronic, mechanical, or MEMS reservoirs.
  • Command of nonlinear oscillators and limit-cycle systems, and the ability to connect theory to measured hardware behavior.
  • Strong quantitative and computational skills: Python or MATLAB, numerical simulation of dynamical systems, time-series and signal analysis.
  • Comfort in the lab: you can specify measurements, interpret noisy data, and debug a physical system.
  • Working knowledge of analog signal processing and sensor interfaces, enough to collaborate closely with circuit and device engineers. Hands-on MEMS, analog or mixed-signal, or analog AI experience is a strong plus.
  • An entrepreneurial temperament: you have a high tolerance for ambiguity and are comfortable making the plan up as you go, without needing a playbook to know what to do next.

TandemLaunch is committed to building a community of excellence, equity, and diversity. We welcome applications from women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, sexual minority groups, and other candidates who will enrich our ideas and perspectives.
