The posting

St Cross Catholic Primary School is seeking an enthusiastic Key Stage 2 class teacher on a 0.5 FTE (Weds-Fris)

Maternity cover (Contract from January 2027 for approximately one year)

About the school

Main purpose of the role

  • Plan, teach and assess high-quality lessons in line with the school’s curriculum and Christian values for a KS2 class on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Maintain consistently high expectations for behaviour, attainment and presentation.
  • Work in close partnership with the KS2 leader; protected joint planning and preparation time is built into the role.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver daily classroom teaching, including adaptation to meet the needs of pupils with SEND, EAL and disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Use formative assessment to check understanding and adapt teaching so pupils are secure before moving on.
  • Plan medium- and short-term sequences that link to whole-school curriculum progression.
  • Mark, record and report pupil progress in line with school policy.
  • Contribute to the pastoral life of the school and uphold its Catholic values.
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings, parents’ evenings (termly), and relevant CPD.
  • Safeguard pupils: follow school safeguarding procedures and complete required training.

Person specification — essential

  • Qualified teacher status (QTS) or equivalent.
  • Recent primary KS2 classroom experience.
  • Strong understanding of assessment for learning and curriculum progression in KS2.
  • Ability to plan effective lessons that meet the needs of mixed-ability classes and support pupils with SEND and EAL.
  • Good classroom management and a commitment to high standards of behaviour and attitudes.
  • Team-player with excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to planning and improvement.
  • Commitment to the school’s values; applicants of other faiths or none are welcome.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a one-form-entry school or small team settings.
  • Experience of preparing children for end of key stage assessments.

Contract details and benefits

  • 0.5 FTE (Wednesday-Friday) fixed-term maternity cover, starting January 2027, for approximately 12 months.
  • Salary: MPS/UPS (pro rata) dependent on experience.
  • Protected joint planning time with the KS2 leader.
  • Supportive induction and access to school CPD.
