16.5 hours per week, 52 weeks a year Permanent

Monday to Thursday 2.30p.m - 6:00 p.m. & Friday 3.00 p.m. - 5.30 p.m.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To ensure the school premises are maintained to the highest standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • To thoroughly clean all designated areas to the required specification, using appropriate cleaning techniques, equipment and materials.
  • Cleaning duties may include polishing, floor treatment, scrubbing, burnishing, vacuuming, carpet shampooing, dusting, mopping, sweeping, washing and the removal of rubbish.
  • To clean and maintain all areas of the school, including floors, toilets, sinks, windows, internal glass, doors, walls, radiators, kitchen and cooker surfaces, kitchen units, cupboards, skirting boards, desks, tables, chairs, computers, shower heads and other fixtures and fittings. This list is not exhaustive.
  • To clean internal windows and all internal glass to the required standard.
  • To empty waste bins throughout the school and safely remove rubbish and litter to the designated disposal areas, taking particular care when handling liquids, broken glass or other potentially hazardous materials.
  • To deal appropriately with bodily fluids and areas affected by sickness, ensuring they are cleaned and disinfected promptly and safely. Appropriate PPE will be provided.
  • To replenish toiletries, bin bags and other consumable supplies as directed.
  • To operate cleaning machinery and equipment, including polishing machines, vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, dryers, buffers and carpet shampoo machines.
  • To clean, check and safely store all cleaning equipment and machinery after use. This includes emptying vacuum cleaners and buffer bags, checking cables and reporting any faults or damage to the Site Manager.
  • To ensure mops, cloths and other cleaning materials are washed and left to dry appropriately at the end of each cleaning session.
  • To use cleaning chemicals and materials economically and safely, ensuring all containers are correctly labelled and that manufacturers' instructions are followed.
  • To ensure all cleaning chemicals, materials and equipment are securely stored when not in use and to assist in maintaining storage areas in a clean, safe and tidy condition.
  • To use appropriate warning signs, protective clothing and safety equipment when carrying out cleaning duties and to ensure PPE is worn where required.
  • To work safely at all times, having due regard for the health, safety and welfare of pupils, staff, visitors and other users of the school premises.
  • To comply with all relevant Health and Safety requirements, safer working practices, legislation and Trust/School policies.
  • To report immediately to the Site Manager any defects, hazards or damage identified within cleaning areas, including defective electrical sockets, lighting, vandalism or other maintenance concerns.
  • To be responsible for locking and unlocking windows and doors as required in connection with cleaning duties.
  • To know the location of first aid equipment and firefighting equipment within the school and follow relevant emergency procedures.
  • To comply with school policies and procedures and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the role.
  • To attend and undertake training relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the post.
  • To take pride in the appearance and cleanliness of the school and maintain a professional standard of personal presentation.
  • To provide cover for absent colleagues on a rota basis when required. This may involve reasonable changes to working hours or times.
  • To coordinate holiday cover arrangements to ensure adequate cleaning provision throughout the year, as agreed with the Caretaker or Site/Estates Manager.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and nature of the post, as directed by the Site Manager.

In addition to the ability to perform the duties of the post, the successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, including:

  • Motivation to work with children and young people.
  • The ability to form and maintain appropriate professional relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people.
  • Emotional resilience when working in a school environment, including when dealing with challenging behaviour.
  • An appropriate understanding of the use of authority and the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries and standards of behaviour.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, child protection and promoting the welfare of children and young people in accordance with school policies and procedures.

All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references, and pre-employment medical clearance. In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), online searches will also be carried out for shortlisted candidates. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
