The posting

Primary Purpose:

To provide classroom cover support in the academy by supervising classes of students using resources and plans from their teacher in order for them to continue their learning.

Responsible to:

Assistant Headteacher (Teaching and Learning) via Senior Cover Supervisor

Responsibilities:

  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils.
  • Establish productive working relationships with students acting as a role model.
  • Respond to students’ general queries and keep students on task in the teacher’s absence.
  • To carry out registration where a tutor is missing.
  • To follow the school reading/tutor programme when covering during tutor time.
  • Provide objective and accurate feedback to the teacher on the conduct of the lesson including keeping appropriate records as agreed with the teacher.
  • Ensure, as far as possible, that students comply with the instructions left by the usual class teacher.
  • Promote positive values, attitudes and good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
  • Make appropriate use of equipment and resources.
  • Comply with lesson plans and instructions from the class teacher.
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, equal opportunities, health and safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • In line with the operational needs of the school, undertake other duties (e.g. supervising examinations) when needed.
  • Participate in training and continuing professional development.
  • Attend relevant school meetings as required
  • Maintain an awareness of school, national and statutory policies and requirements and apply these in the workplace.
  • Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school by:

o developing effective professional relationships with colleagues, knowing how and when to draw on advice and specialist support

o Deploying support staff effectively in the classroom where the usual class teacher is absent.

o Communicate effectively with parents with regard to pupils’ achievements and well-being as required.

General:

  • Undertake break time duties as appropriate.
  • Act as a tutor.
  • Support colleagues as appropriate.
  • Attend after school events such as parents’ evenings.
  • To attend and actively engage in all professional development.

To undertake any other reasonable duties deemed necessary by the Headteacher to ensure the smooth running of the academy.
