The posting

Are you an experienced Chemistry teacher ready to lead and inspire?

Hampton Gardens is seeking an outstanding Head of Chemistry (Maternity Cover) to join our thriving Science Department from January 2027 on a fixed-term basis to cover a period of maternity leave. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate educator to lead the Chemistry curriculum, inspire students and staff, and contribute to the continued success of our Science Department during this period.

About the Department

The Science Department works hard to ensure that all students feel safe and secure in their learning and strive to achieve academic excellence. This focus is underpinned by an ethos of continuous improvement, putting students and staff's needs at the forefront of everything we do.

Our department is exceptionally well-equipped with modern laboratory facilities, enabling engaging and effective practical science lessons. Our ethos is simple: practical activities are central to great science teaching, and our facilities make this possible.

The Department has developed the Key Stage 3 curriculum to prepare students for the Key Stage 4 Science options. We currently offer AQA GCSE Combined Science (Trilogy), AQA GCSE Physics, AQA GCSE Biology and AQA GCSE Chemistry. At Key Stage 5 we currently run OCR A Level Physics, OCR A Level Biology and OCR A Level Chemistry.

Outside of the classroom, science students at Hampton Gardens are able to experience regular enrichment activities, including an active weekly STEM club which benefits from links with local businesses, as well as regular trips to universities and national science competitions.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead the development and delivery of high-quality Chemistry teaching across all Key Stages, including A Level.
  • Support the Head of Science in managing the department and deputise when required.
  • Drive curriculum innovation and ensure schemes of work meet national standards and school priorities.
  • Monitor assessment, recording, and reporting to secure outstanding student progress.
  • Mentor and support colleagues, including ECTs and trainee teachers.
  • Contribute to enrichment activities such as STEM clubs, trips, and competitions.
  • Play a key role in departmental development planning and resource management.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • A well-qualified Chemistry specialist with Qualified Teacher Status and experience teaching across Key Stages, including Key Stage 5.
  • Experienced in raising attainment and leading departmental initiatives.
  • Skilled in curriculum planning, assessment, and data analysis.
  • Able to inspire and support colleagues, fostering a culture of high expectations.
  • Committed to inclusive practice and safeguarding.
  • Organised, reflective, and enthusiastic about professional growth.

This position is offered on a fixed-term basis to cover a period of maternity leave. The anticipated duration of the appointment will be communicated during the recruitment process; however, the role will end when the substantive postholder returns from maternity leave, in accordance with the terms of the contract.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every member of staff feels valued and supported. Whether you are an experienced middle leader or an ambitious teacher looking to further develop your leadership skills, this maternity cover role offers an excellent opportunity to make a significant impact within a successful and supportive department. If you're passionate about Chemistry and eager to contribute to our school community, we'd love to hear from you.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
