Job Title: Head of Science

Location: Esteem North Academy Chesterfield

Grade/Scale: MPS / UPS Plus SEN 1 plus TLR2a

Contract: 32.5 hours per week

Start date: April 2027

We are looking to offer a full -time permanent contract for an inspiring teacher and leader to join our academy as Head of the secondary Science curriculum. The role will include a teaching timetable for KS3 and KS4. The team will consist of 2 other staff members who will be located at other sites. The Head of Science will take responsibility for the quality of the Science curriculum and ensure that planning provides engaging lessons for our pupils and that lessons are fully resourced. The Head of Science will ensure that the curriculum is sequenced, that pupils make progress and achieve outcomes. We deliver GCSE Biology currently. You will lead on changes to exam regulations and develop any new curriculum offers to meet the needs of the cohorts of excluded pupils that come to roll. You will be able to articulate the subject, analyse your progress data and lead on Inspections. Our sites are small compared to mainstream and house around 100 pupils. Classes may have up to around 10 pupils and you will be an allocated form tutor.

We welcome applications from candidates who are able to teach engaging and inspiring Science lessons to challenging and disengaged KS3 and 4 pupils. All of our pupils have SEND and we focus on inclusive classrooms. We do not have gas or science labs. Science is delivered in a standard classroom and we are looking for inclusive and engaging lessons.

Applicants should have good knowledge and experience of working with disaffected pupils in a school or other alternative setting. An affinity for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties is an essential quality for this challenging but rewarding opportunity. Applicants should be resilient, have high expectations, and a sense of humour. You must be able to build positive relationships with our pupils and think outside of the box. A growth mindset and positive ethos are essential characteristics that we are looking for.

An allocated base will be named for payment of mileage and any travel calculation between sites for CPD or for engaging in off -site rewards trips etc. Candidates must have access to a car and car insurance with business use included.
