SUMMARY:
The School of Music at East Texas A&M invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in Music (Director of Bands and Instrumental Activities). The successful candidate will provide artistic, academic, and programmatic leadership for the University's band program while contributing to teaching, Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (RSCA), recruitment, outreach, and service. The position includes a reduced teaching load to accommodate administrative duties, in consultation annually with the Director of the School of Music.
The School of Music at East Texas A&M serves approximately 240 music majors across instrumental, vocal, and keyboard areas and is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). It offers baccalaureate and master's degrees in music education and performance, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The School of Music is housed in a $30 million music building completed in 2010 containing state-of-the-art recital and concert halls, studios, rehearsal halls, classrooms, and teaching areas.
The band program includes three concert bands, two jazz ensembles, and marching and athletic bands. The Wind Ensemble has performed at both regional and national College Band Directors National Association Conferences as well as the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention, most recently in 2018. The Wind Ensemble is also actively involved in commissioning and premiering new works from the nation’s leading composers. The Marching Band performs at all home games as well as exhibitions at marching contests such as the Texas State UIL Marching Band Contest and Bands of America Regionals and Grand Nationals Marching Festival.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct the Wind Ensemble (top ensemble)
- Teach Graduate and Undergraduate Conducting
- Teach graduate coursework in instrumental repertoire and pedagogy
- Teach additional courses based upon the candidate’s area of expertise
- Organize and administer a comprehensive university band program including concert ensembles, marching band, jazz ensembles and athletic bands
- Provide overall leadership of the band staff and instrumental faculty, as well as program development
- Supervise budget management and fiscal responsibilities for division needs
- Recruit for the band and university at the regional and state level
- Promote the band and university at regional, state and national events
- Participate in creative and/or research activities consistent with all faculty appointments
- Participate in service activities consistent with all faculty appointments
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of the School of Music
- Participate in service activities consistent with all faculty appointments
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Education: Doctorate in Music Education, Conducting, or a closely related field from an accredited institution; equivalent university experience and demonstrated achievement maybe considered in lieu of the doctorate
· Experience / Knowledge / Skills: At least three (3) years of experience as either a Director or Assistant Director of Bands at the university level
· Ability to: Multi-task and work well as part of a team, manage budgets associated with an R2 institution, coordinate department-wide recruiting activities
PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
- At least five (5) years of experience in university teaching
