Department:

Underwriting COE

Job Description:

The Non-Admitted Underwriter is responsible for independently underwriting small to mid-size non-admitted commercial accounts within assigned authority and guidelines. The role evaluates, selects, prices, and structures new and renewal business; owns underwriting quality and results for an assigned book; and balances profitable growth, retention, rate adequacy, service, and compliance.

The Non-Admitted Underwriter operates independently with guidance available for risks outside established authority or appetite. The role manages agency relationships, provides practical risk guidance, supports peers through experience, and partners with Distribution, Risk Control, Claims, Product, Actuarial, Operations, Compliance, and other functions to deliver responsive and consistent underwriting solutions.

Work Arrangement:

  • Employees who live within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. The initial training period may require additional in‑office days.

Accountabilities:

Risk Selection & Underwriting Authority

  • Underwrite small to mid-size non-admitted new and renewal accounts by analyzing exposures, loss history, financial condition, controls, inspection findings, product availability, and other available risk information.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, coverage, terms, conditions, limits, deductibles, and risk improvement expectations within delegated authority and applicable underwriting guidelines.
  • Exercise individual underwriting authority within assigned parameters; escalate risks outside authority or appetite with timely analysis and a clear recommendation.
  • Drive corrective action or remediation strategies on renewal accounts when performance, controls, or emerging concerns require action.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant execution of renewals, non-renewals, conditional notices, documentation, disclosures, and applicable non-admitted regulatory requirements.

Portfolio Ownership & Performance

  • Own underwriting quality and performance for assigned accounts or book of business, including growth, pricing, retention, mix, profitability, and service results.
  • Use account and portfolio data to identify trends, performance gaps, concentrations, and opportunities; take action within assigned scope and raise broader concerns when appropriate.
  • Maintain a disciplined pipeline and pursue business that aligns with underwriting appetite and portfolio objectives.
  • Achieve established production, service, quality, growth, retention, and profitability expectations.

Agency Relationships & Market Engagement

  • Manage assigned agency relationships through regular communication, portfolio reviews, pre-renewal discussions, pipeline management, and responsive problem solving.
  • Provide clear risk guidance and commercially sound solutions while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Coordinate with Distribution to build pipeline, resolve issues or conflicts, support change adoption, and communicate market conditions affecting assigned accounts or agencies.
  • Participate in limited agency or territory travel as business needs require.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Risk Solutions

  • Partner with Risk Control on inspections, follow-up activity, service needs, and risk improvement plans.
  • Coordinate with Claims, Product, Actuarial, Operations, Compliance, and other partners to resolve account issues and support consistent customer and broker solutions.
  • Use a consultative approach to understand agent and insured needs and develop solutions that are mutually beneficial, competitive, and aligned with underwriting objectives.
  • Support continuous improvement by sharing feedback, testing new approaches, and adopting updated workflows and technology.

Team Contribution & Capability Development

  • Support and guide peers by sharing experience, modeling effective underwriting practices, and providing constructive feedback.
  • Participate in peer reviews, onboarding, training, and knowledge-sharing activities as assigned.
  • Demonstrate accountability, sound judgment, responsiveness, and a collaborative approach that contributes to team success.
  • Use evolving underwriting technology, data, analytics, and AI-enabled workflows to improve decision quality and execution.

Qualifications:

  • Commercial insurance underwriting experience with demonstrated capability to independently handle small to mid-size accounts and exposures.
  • Solid knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, coverage, pricing, portfolio management, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound independent judgment and make decisions within delegated underwriting authority.
  • Business and financial acumen, including the ability to interpret account and portfolio performance information and translate insights into action.
  • Effective relationship management, consultative communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across functions in a matrixed environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational discipline, and commitment to responsive service.
  • Ability to independently use core underwriting systems, data and analytics tools, and evolving technology, including AI-enabled workflows.
  • Professional designation or continuing insurance education is preferred. Demonstrated capability and relevant experience may be considered in place of a specific degree requirement.

Pay Range:

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
