Field Underwriting

Job Description:

The Senior Non-Admitted Underwriter is responsible for underwriting complex non-admitted commercial accounts that require advanced judgment, significant individual authority, and disciplined portfolio management. The role independently evaluates, selects, prices, and structures new and renewal business; serves as a trusted risk advisor and negotiator to key distribution partners; and proactively drives profitable growth, retention, rate adequacy, and underwriting quality across an assigned portfolio or territory.

The Senior Non-Admitted Underwriter operates with a high degree of autonomy, handles referrals for defined risks, and applies the appropriate non-admitted approach based on account needs, product availability, underwriting appetite, and regulatory requirements. The role recommends appetite or portfolio actions based on market and performance insights, mentors less experienced underwriting professionals, and partners across Distribution, Risk Control, Claims, Product, Actuarial, Operations, Compliance, and other functions to deliver responsive, compliant, and market-relevant solutions.

Work Arrangement:

  • Employees who live within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. The initial training period may require additional in‑office days.

Accountabilities:

Complex Risk Selection & Underwriting Authority

  • Underwrite complex non-admitted new and renewal accounts requiring advanced judgment, including analysis of exposures, loss history, financial condition, controls, inspection findings, product availability, and other available risk data.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, coverage, terms, conditions, limits, deductibles, and risk improvement expectations within delegated authority and applicable underwriting guidelines.
  • Exercise significant individual underwriting authority and make referral decisions for defined risks; escalate risks outside authority or appetite with clear analysis and recommendations.
  • Drive corrective action and remediation strategies for complex accounts when performance, controls, or emerging concerns warrant action.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant execution of non-admitted transactions, including renewals, non-renewals, conditional notices, documentation, disclosures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Portfolio Strategy & Performance

  • Steer the strategy and performance of an assigned complex portfolio or territory, with accountability for growth, pricing, retention, mix, profitability, and underwriting quality.
  • Use portfolio data, market intelligence, and account-level insights to identify trends, concentrations, performance gaps, and opportunities; recommend and execute corrective actions.
  • Recommend adjustments to underwriting appetite, guidelines, pricing approach, or risk selection based on portfolio results and market conditions.
  • Maintain a disciplined pipeline and proactively pursue business that aligns with portfolio objectives and risk appetite.
  • Achieve established production, service, quality, growth, retention, and profitability expectations.

Market Engagement & Distribution Partnerships

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and advanced negotiator for key distribution partners, providing risk-based guidance and commercially sound solutions.
  • Develop and manage strong agency relationships through regular portfolio reviews, pre-renewal discussions, pipeline management, and responsive problem solving.
  • Proactively drive profitable growth through agency partnerships, balancing customer needs with underwriting discipline and long-term portfolio health.
  • Engage regularly in agency and territory travel and participate in relevant industry organizations, events, or market forums.
  • Coordinate with Distribution, Claims, Product, Actuarial, Operations, Compliance, and other partners to resolve issues, align decisions, and support cohesive non-admitted customer and broker solutions.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Risk Solutions

  • Partner with Risk Control on inspections, follow-up activity, service plans, and risk improvement strategies for complex accounts.
  • Coordinate with Distribution, Claims, Product, Actuarial, Operations, and other partners to resolve issues, align decisions, and support cohesive customer and broker solutions.
  • Use a consultative approach to understand agent and insured needs while developing solutions that are mutually beneficial, competitive, and aligned with underwriting objectives.
  • Support change adoption and continuous improvement by sharing feedback, testing new approaches, and helping translate underwriting strategy into consistent execution.

Technical Leadership & Talent Development

  • Mentor and coach less experienced underwriting professionals through referrals, peer reviews, technical guidance, and ongoing feedback.
  • Model effective underwriting practices, sound judgment, accountability, service, and responsiveness.
  • Review and approve underwriting decisions within assigned referral authority and support consistent application of underwriting standards.
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and development of new hires, internal promotions, and team members building technical capability.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for organizational initiatives, capability development, workflow modernization, and AI-enabled underwriting work, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience underwriting commercial insurance risks of increasing complexity, including non-admitted or surplus lines business, with the technical capability to operate at a senior level.
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, coverage, pricing, portfolio management, and regulatory requirements within assigned commercial lines or niche segments, including knowledge of non-admitted or surplus lines underwriting practices, market placement considerations, and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound independent judgment and make decisions within significant delegated underwriting authority.
  • Strong financial and business acumen, including the ability to interpret portfolio and account performance data and translate insights into action.
  • Proven relationship management, consultative selling, negotiation, and market-facing communication skills.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
