The posting

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role:

The New York Times is seeking an experienced, highly organized and proactive executive assistant to support the newsroom masthead, including the masthead editor overseeing newsroom strategy, operations and finance as well as one additional masthead editor.

This is a critical role at the center of the Newsroom's leadership and administrative operations. The executive assistant will manage complex scheduling and logistics, organize priorities and follow-through, coordinate across senior leaders and departments, draft correspondence, support projects with research and project management, and serve as a trusted representative of the masthead leader's office.

The ideal candidate exercises sophisticated judgment, anticipates needs, communicates with discretion and professionalism, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative newsroom environment. They should be able to manage shifting priorities while maintaining strong attention to detail and confidentiality.

This position will report directly to the assistant managing editor for strategy, operations and finance.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a wide range of operational and administrative support with organization, proactivity and discretion
  • Manage a complex, fast-changing calendar by prioritizing requests, resolving conflicts, and safeguarding focus time
  • Track executive priorities, direct report updates, and newsroom initiatives by preparing agendas, briefing packs, and action trackers to ensure prompt decision follow-through
  • Anticipate needs by proactively flagging relevant information, risks, and opportunities
  • Draft and edit executive correspondence using strong judgment and discretion
  • Process expense reports, reconcile receipts, and ensure timely reimbursement
  • Serve as a professional liaison to newsroom leaders, department heads and external partners
  • Coordinate domestic and international travel, including detailed itineraries, logistics and alignment with security and operations teams
  • Work primarily on-site (4–5 days per week) to provide direct, real-time newsroom support
  • Provide support as needed for the teams overseen by the leaders you support
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of administrative or executive support experience supporting leaders in complex, fast-paced organizations (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Experience operating with a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and judgment when handling sensitive matters
  • Demonstrated organizational, written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience communicating and building relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the company, and the ability to take initiative and lead efforts as needed
  • Demonstrated passion for and interest in journalism and media
  • Proficiency in Google Suite workspaces

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a complex news or media organization
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of professional experience

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
