The posting

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Mission Overview & Responsibilities:

The Data Platform mission is to help us use data to answer important questions, power user experiences, and inform strategic decisions.

The New York Times is looking for a Technical Product Manager II to shape product direction for Data Platform's Compute and Storage team. The team builds shared compute engines, lakehouse storage, and connective infrastructure so engineers can publish and own data products without managing the underlying platform.

You will partner with engineering, machine learning, analytics, and others across the company to deliver reliable, scalable, easy-to-use capabilities. You will make data infrastructure more accessible and efficient through reusable products for diverse workloads.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters in Times Square, with an expectation of working onsite 3+ days per week. You will report to the Technical Product Director of Data Platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Own the strategy for shared compute and storage capabilities, including compute engines, streaming, orchestration, lakehouse storage, and connective infrastructure.
  • Understand platform users' workflows and translate their needs into clear outcomes, requirements, and priorities.
  • Partner with engineering leaders to scope initiatives, define milestones, manage dependencies and delivery risks, and keep execution aligned with product priorities.
  • Deliver self-service capabilities that help teams build, publish, and operate data products without managing underlying infrastructure; favor reusable solutions.
  • Communicate roadmap progress, risks, and tradeoffs to stakeholders.
  • Guide product lifecycle practices from discovery and iterative delivery through launch, documentation, adoption, and feedback. Support migrations and deprecations with clear user plans.
  • Demonstrate support for The Times' mission and values and a strong commitment to seeking the truth and helping people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience developing technical products as a product manager or in an equivalent role.
  • Experience partnering with engineering teams and platform users to deliver complex data, cloud infrastructure, developer platform, or other technical products.
  • Track record using data and structured reasoning to make product decisions and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Understanding of data infrastructure concepts, including pipelines, compute, storage, data modeling, and governance.
  • Experience communicating technical concepts, priorities, and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in software development, engineering, data science, or analytics; hands-on experience with data products or platform capabilities.
  • Familiarity with processing engines such as Spark, Trino, Flink, Kafka, or Airflow, and with lakehouse or cloud data infrastructure.
  • Experience with platform migrations, deprecations, vendor evaluations, or infrastructure cost management.
  • Familiarity with SQL, Python, BigQuery, or Amazon Web Services.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
