The posting

POSITION OVERVIEW:     The Globe and Mail is looking for a full-time data editor focused on personal finance journalism to join our digital storytelling team. This role will work closely with reporters and editors to build out consumer-focused data projects that empower readers to make informed decisions on everything from credit cards to where to live.     The successful candidate will be part of a growing team that uses data, code and multimedia to produce high-impact journalism for The Globe's audience across all platforms. The team is a multidisciplinary group of developers, data journalists and visual editors. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe's coverage, including long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of The Globe’s most ambitious and innovative work.     We are not prescriptive about tools and technology: editors on the digital storytelling team are journalists first and should be comfortable — and excited — about continually learning new skills and techniques in the service of telling the best story possible. We build on what we learn together as a team, and we value inclusive, accessible design and a supportive, collegial workplace.     RESPONSIBILITIES:

Gather, process, analyze and visualize data to support daily and enterprise personal finance and business journalism.  Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on data-driven stories, with an emphasis on consumer-focused projects.  Spot check data work done by other team members and journalists in the newsroom.  Build and maintain tools that aid the work of reporters and editors in data reporting.  Act as an ambassador for data literacy in journalism across the newsroom.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong news judgment with a good sense of how data best serves the story and the reader.  Experience working on data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business or consumer journalism focus.  Experience with acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes.  Experience with data analysis tools like Excel or Google Sheets and coding languages like Python or R.  Experience visualizing data with a demonstrated understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism.  An ability to juggle multiple projects of varying deadlines and sizes.  Additional qualifications that would be an asset in this role:  Experience integrating AI into data work — or an enthusiasm for doing so.  Experience working with APIs.  Experience with database management best practices and relevant AWS services.  Knowledgeable about available business-related datasets.  Familiarity with data visualization libraries.

This position is based in the Toronto office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.   APPLICATION: Please include a cover letter with your resume (that is written by you, not AI). Our promise to readers is that the best work comes from our own (human) curiosity and creativity — we’d like to see yours.     SALARY: This position is classified as a Content Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
