About the Role
Location: Altrincham
Shift Pattern: Rotational
Our fulfilment operations rely on engineering and automation to keep customer orders moving through our sites every day. As a Shift Engineer, you'll play a key role in keeping that operation running – working hands-on with automated equipment, solving technical problems and continuously improving the reliability and performance of our systems.
This is more than a reactive maintenance role. Alongside responding to live engineering issues, you'll have the opportunity to investigate recurring faults, improve preventative maintenance, carry out root cause analysis and contribute to continuous improvement and engineering projects across the site.
You'll be working in a fast-paced fulfilment environment where Engineering and Operations work closely together. You'll use your technical expertise to keep equipment performing at its best, while looking beyond the immediate fix to identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency and performance.
We're looking for an engineer who enjoys getting hands-on, solving problems and understanding why something has failed – not just getting it running again.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll be part of the site Engineering team, providing hands-on technical support and helping us maintain a safe, reliable and high-performing operation.
Your role will include:
- Diagnosing and resolving electrical, mechanical and controls-related faults across the operation.
- Providing technical support during live operational issues, ensuring problems are resolved safely and effectively.
- Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across site equipment and systems.
- Investigating recurring equipment failures and completing root cause analysis to identify long-term solutions.
- Supporting the development of our PPM programme and helping us move towards a more predictive and reliability-focused maintenance approach.
- Using reliability and continuous improvement techniques including TPM, RCA, RCM and FMEA.
- Identifying opportunities to improve equipment availability, reliability and overall performance.
- Supporting engineering projects, equipment upgrades and wider change initiatives.
- Working closely with operational teams and coaching colleagues to build their knowledge and confidence when working with equipment.
- Supporting the completion of Health & Safety, quality and continuous improvement actions.
- Maintaining accurate engineering and maintenance records through our CMMS.
- Ensuring engineering activity is completed safely and in line with required standards.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with strong hands-on engineering experience who is comfortable working in a fast-moving operational environment.
You'll ideally have:
- At least three years' hands-on electrical engineering experience within an FMCG, manufacturing, fulfilment, distribution or similarly fast-paced automated environment.
- An ONC, NVQ L3, or equivalent engineering qualification.
- A strong electrical bias alongside good mechanical skills.
- Good knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical and pneumatic systems.
- Experience of PLC and servo drive fault diagnosis.
- A good understanding of planned maintenance, fault finding and equipment reliability.
- A strong awareness of Health & Safety and safe engineering practices.
- A proactive approach to continuous improvement and preventing recurring equipment issues.
- The ability to work effectively with both engineering and operational colleagues.
- 17th or 18th Edition would be advantageous but isn't essential.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is technically curious, enjoys solving problems and wants to contribute to improving the way our operation performs.
