Job Description

Do you have the news judgement and editing skill to help shape how the world's insurance and reinsurance markets understand risk?

The Insurer, a market-leading specialty (re)insurance news, analysis and data service published by Reuters, is seeking a US News Editor to join its US editorial team. Reporting to the US Editor, the role will add experienced editing capacity, help set daily priorities and support the team in delivering fast, accurate and distinctive journalism for a global financial audience.

The Insurer spans the underwriting and distribution of complex risk, and the capital, infrastructure and services that support it. From climate change to cyber threats, we report on the forces reshaping the risk landscape and how insurance and reinsurance markets respond.

The US News and Analysis Editor will work closely with the US Editor and reporters to shape coverage, strengthen copy and maintain Reuters editorial standards. The successful candidate will be a sharp-eyed editor and versatile journalist who can move seamlessly between editing, writing, planning and supporting the wider editorial team in a fast-paced newsroom.

Location: New York.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set priorities: Help set daily priorities and support the team in delivering fast, accurate and distinctive journalism for a global financial audience in line with Reuters standards and Reuters Principles.
  • Editing and packaging: Edit, refine and package stories with accuracy and speed, ensuring copy is clear, compelling and ready for publication on The Insurer website as well as Reuters and LSEG platforms.
  • Daily news agenda: Work with the US Editor to manage the daily news agenda, set priorities and provide additional editing capacity.
  • US analysis: Work with global analysis editor and head of data and special projects to lead US analysis and take responsibility for producing a combination of topical/responsive and feature “deep dive” style articles.
  • Editorial standards: Collaborate with reporters and editors to sharpen angles, strengthen reporting and uphold editorial standards in line with Reuters standards and Reuters Principles.
  • Original reporting: Gather information, build and maintain contacts and contribute original reporting where required to break news or present it in the appropriate form for clients.
  • Market expertise: Build expertise and knowledge to broaden and deepen coverage of the US insurance, reinsurance and distribution markets.
  • Accessible journalism: Simplify complex financial and insurance concepts into accessible, engaging journalism.
  • Multimedia storytelling: Embrace the principle of telling stories using the most appropriate media available, including visuals, video and audio.
  • Leadership support: Support the US Editor as required and provide senior editorial cover when delegated.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: At least five years’ experience editing financial or business news in a newsroom environment, with experience at a senior level preferred.
  • Technical skills: A proven ability to edit and write wire-ready copy quickly, cleanly and accurately.
  • Core competencies: Strong news judgement and the confidence to make decisions in a fast-moving news environment.
  • Flexibility: A flexible approach and the ability to juggle multiple stories, deadlines and priorities.
  • Communication and collaboration: Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to give clear, constructive feedback.
  • Attention to detail: A keen eye for detail and a commitment to clarity, accuracy, fairness and speed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry knowledge: Knowledge of insurance, reinsurance or financial markets is preferred, although candidates with strong relevant editing experience in other sectors will be considered.
  • Additional experience: Experience integrating multimedia into storytelling and an interest in responsible newsroom uses of AI are desirable.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
