Job Summary:

The Platform Engineer II builds, extends, and maintains the shared data platform that enables engineering, analytics, and governance teams to deliver data products reliably and at scale. Operating at the Group Company level (e.g. PHLY, FICOH), this role is responsible for both the day-to-day operation and the build-out of new platform capabilities on the Databricks Lakehouse platform — managing Databricks Terraform configurations, deploying Unity Catalog structures (catalogs, schemas, RBAC) via Infrastructure as Code, maintaining Azure DevOps (ADO) pipelines, and participating in the full dev-to-prod data delivery lifecycle.

This is a data platform role that applies software engineering best practices — version control, automated testing, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code — to the design and operation of a modern data platform. The Platform Engineer works closely with Data Engineers, Solution Architects, and Data Governance to ensure the platform supports the full data delivery lifecycle across each Group Company’s environments.

Essential Job Functions:

Platform Operations & Infrastructure:

  • Build and configure new Databricks workspaces, Unity Catalog structures (catalogs, schemas, volumes), and compute resources across development, test, and production environments for assigned Group Companies, as well as maintain existing configurations.
  • Design and develop new Databricks Terraform modules for repeatable, auditable provisioning of platform resources — including catalog deployment, schema creation, and RBAC/permissions via IaC — and maintain existing configurations.
  • Manage and optimize compute configurations (job clusters, SQL warehouses, serverless) balancing cost, performance, and isolation requirements.
  • Implement and maintain platform-level security controls: identity integration (Entra ID / service principals), ABAC policies, network security, and secrets management.

CI/CD & Deployment Automation for handoff to Production:

  • Build new and maintain existing Azure DevOps (ADO) pipelines for automated deployment of Declarative Automation Bundles (DABs), notebooks, libraries, and platform configuration.
  • Design and develop deployment patterns that support the dev → tst → prd promotion lifecycle with appropriate gating, validation, and rollback capabilities.
  • Create and maintain shared pipeline templates and reusable deployment components that engineering teams consume for their own data products.
  • Design and automate post-deployment tasks (DDL execution, configuration seeding, smoke testing).

Observability & Reliability on Databricks:

  • Build new business monitoring and alerting capabilities for platform health: compute utilization, job SLAs, pipeline failures, storage growth, and cost trends.
  • Design and build platform dashboards that give engineering and leadership visibility into operational metrics.
  • Investigate and resolve platform-level incidents; participate in root cause analysis and implement preventive measures.
  • Monitor and optimize platform costs; identify underutilized resources and recommend right-sizing.

Developer Experience & Self-Service:

  • Maintain platform documentation, onboarding guides, and runbooks.
  • Support engineering teams with platform-related issues: workspace access, compute configuration, deployment troubleshooting, Unity Catalog permissions.
  • Contribute to internal tooling and shared utilities that improve developer productivity.
  • Participate in platform design discussions and contribute to Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 2–5 years of experience in platform engineering, DevOps, Data mesh engineering, or data engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks Terraform provider (workspace provisioning, Unity Catalog configuration, compute management).
  • Hands-on experience with Declarative Automation Bundles (DABs) for deployment and lifecycle management of Databricks assets.
  • Experience with version control (Git) including branching strategies, pull requests, and code review.

Preferred:

  • Preferred candidates will have hands-on experience developing and maintaining Databricks Declarative Automation Bundles (DABs) to package and standardize data pipelines, workflows, and associated configurations for deployment by our infrastructure and production teams.
  • Familiarity with TMNAS engineering standards, CI/CD practices, security controls, and production deployment requirements is preferred to ensure seamless integration, operational readiness, and efficient handoff to production support teams.
  • Experience with Azure cloud services (Entra ID, Key Vault, Storage Accounts, Networking).
  • Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) CI/CD pipelines or equivalent (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI).
  • Experience with Bicep / ARM templates for Azure infrastructure provisioning.
  • Experience in Python and/or Bash for scripting and automation.
  • Exposure to data platform concepts (Lakehouse architecture, Delta Lake, medallion pattern, data cataloging).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tooling (Azure Monitor, Grafana, Datadog, or platform-native dashboards).
  • Experience supporting multi-tenant or multi-environment platform configurations.
  • P&C Insurance industry experience is valued but not required.

Salary range $90,000 to $125,000. Ultimate salary offered will be based on factors such as applicant experience and geographic location. Our company offers a competitive benefits package and bonus eligibility on top of base.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
