About Turaco
Turaco is a fast-growing insurance and technology company on a mission to make insurance accessible, affordable and meaningful for millions of people across Africa.
Through our innovative B2B2C distribution model, we partner with banks, SACCOs, microfinance institutions, fintechs, mobile network operators and other businesses to embed simple, relevant insurance solutions into everyday customer journeys.
We believe insurance should be easy to understand, simple to access and dependable when customers need it most.
About the Role
We are looking for an ambitious, commercially driven Business Development Manager – Bancassurance & Alternative Channels to accelerate Turaco's growth in Kenya.
This is a frontline business acquisition role for someone who enjoys opening doors, building senior-level relationships, negotiating partnerships and closing deals.
The successful candidate will identify and secure new distribution partnerships, develop innovative embedded insurance opportunities and deliver measurable growth in Gross Written Premium (GWP).
We are looking for a hunter who can build relationships, convert opportunities into signed partnerships and turn those partnerships into sustainable revenue.
Key Responsibilities
1. New Business Acquisition & Partnerships
- Identify, prospect and acquire new partners across banks, SACCOs, MFIs, fintechs, digital lenders, mobile network operators, aggregators and other alternative distribution channels.
- Build relationships with senior decision-makers, including CEOs, Managing Directors, Heads of Bancassurance and Commercial Leaders.
- Lead the full business development cycle, from prospecting and pitching to negotiation, contracting and commercial launch.
- Develop a healthy pipeline of high-value opportunities aligned with Turaco's growth ambitions.
- Identify opportunities to displace competitors and expand Turaco's market share.
2. Revenue Growth & Commercial Performance
- Own and deliver assigned new-business GWP targets.
- Translate partnerships into measurable premium production and customer acquisition.
- Develop commercially attractive proposals and negotiate sustainable partnership terms.
- Monitor pipeline conversion, projected revenue and deal closure timelines.
- Identify cross-selling and expansion opportunities within newly acquired partnerships.
3. Bancassurance & Alternative Channel Development
- Develop tailored insurance propositions for retail banking, SME banking, lending, digital finance and other partner ecosystems.
- Work with internal teams to structure embedded insurance, credit life, hospital cash and other relevant protection solutions.
- Understand prospective partners' business models and identify natural points for insurance integration.
- Support commercially viable product innovation that improves insurance penetration and customer value.
4. Partnership Launch & Execution
- Coordinate with Product, Insurance Operations, Technology, Finance and Partnerships teams to ensure timely onboarding and activation.
- Own commercial readiness and agreed launch timelines for newly signed partners.
- Ensure successful handover to the Partnership Success team, with clear growth objectives and documented commitments.
- Remain accountable for ensuring acquired partnerships progress from signed contracts to revenue generation.
5. Market Intelligence & Competitive Positioning
- Maintain strong knowledge of Kenya's bancassurance, microinsurance and alternative distribution landscape.
- Track competitor propositions, pricing, distribution strategies and emerging opportunities.
- Identify underserved customer segments and innovative distribution models.
- Represent Turaco at relevant banking, insurance, fintech and industry forums.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, Finance, Marketing, Economics or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of relevant business development or institutional partnership acquisition experience, preferably in insurance, bancassurance, fintech or financial services.
- Proven success in originating, negotiating and closing commercial partnerships.
- Established relationships within Kenya's banking, SACCO, MFI, fintech or financial services ecosystem.
- Good understanding of insurance distribution, embedded insurance or credit-linked protection products.
- Strong commercial negotiation, presentation and financial analysis skills.
- Ability to engage and influence C-suite executives and senior decision-makers.
- Insurance qualifications such as COP, AIIK or ACII are an added advantage.
The Person Who Will Thrive Here
- We are looking for someone who:
- Is a natural hunter: Proactively creates opportunities rather than waiting for leads.
- Knows how to close: Turns conversations and proposals into signed, revenue-generating partnerships.
- Builds trust: Develops meaningful, long-term relationships with decision-makers.
- Owns results: Takes personal responsibility for pipeline progress, targets and commercial delivery.
- Thinks creatively: Sees opportunities to embed insurance where others may not.
- Moves with urgency: Follows through, removes obstacles and consistently delivers.
- Works collaboratively: Brings internal teams together to deliver exceptional partner and customer experiences.
How Success Will Be Measured
- Performance will be assessed against:
- New strategic partnerships originated and signed.
- New-business GWP generated against assigned targets.
- Quality, value and conversion rate of the sales pipeline.
- Time taken to convert prospects into commercially active partners.
- Revenue contribution and growth potential of acquired partnerships.
- Quality of commercial execution, partner handover and cross-functional collaboration.
