Job Summary

The Manager, Scholarly Integrity, is responsible for overseeing and administering the University's Scholarly Integrity Policy (SC6), ensuring adherence to the highest standards of ethical research practices. This position plays a critical role in managing allegations, conducting inquiries and coordinating investigations when necessary, following the Procedures of UBC’s Scholarly Integrity Policy.

This position is also responsible for writing reports on inquiries and investigations following Tri-agency requirements and operates as the institutional contact for matters relating to the Tri-Agency Responsible Conduct of Research.

The Manager also supports the University's broader scholarly integrity efforts by developing and maintaining training and educational resources, overseeing the scholarly integrity website, and advising on policy updates as challenges in research ethics evolve.

This role’s central demands are a strong grounding in research and university administration, meticulous attention to procedural fairness, and the ability to manage sensitive, high-stakes investigations with discretion and confidentiality.

Organizational Status

This role reports to the Assistant Vice-President, Research and serves as a key advisor on matters related to scholarly integrity, working closely with Faculty Relations, the Office of University Counsel, senior administrators, researchers, and other external and internal stakeholders.

Work Performed

  • Manages the University's Scholarly Integrity Policy (SC6) and ensures compliance with its provisions.
  • Ensures all processes related to scholarly integrity complaints and investigations adhere to principles of procedural fairness and confidentiality.
  • Handles incoming complaints under SC6 and conducts inquiries in alignment with established procedures during the initial inquiry phase of complaints.
  • Identifies and advises on potential or actual conflicts of interest within the scholarly misconduct investigation process, in accordance with institutional and external guidelines.
  • Drafts correspondence to respondents and complainants regarding scholarly integrity matters.
  • Liaises with the Tri-Agency Secretariat on matters related to the responsible conduct of research.
  • Establishes committees for investigations when required.
  • Liaises with external counsel to initiate and monitor the progress and outcome of investigations.
  • Collaborates with other University portfolios when complaints intersect multiple areas of responsibility.
  • Provides recommendations and advice on improvements to scholarly integrity practices and policy development.
  • Develops and delivers targeted training for faculty, staff, and students on maintaining rigorous scholarly standards as outlined in the SC6 Policy.
  • Provides advice on the development and maintenance of the scholarly integrity website to provide accurate and accessible information.
  • Other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgment

The Manager, Scholarly Integrity, plays a crucial role in preserving the University’s reputation for ethical research practices. Errors in judgment, such as mishandling complaints, breaching confidentiality, or failing to ensure procedural fairness, could result in significant reputational harm, legal challenges, and loss of funding. Such errors could disrupt research activities, damage trust within the academic community, and cause undue harm to individuals involved. To mitigate these risks, the Manager must exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to principles of fairness and compliance with institutional and legal standards.

This position reports to the Assistant Vice-President, Research and works independently under general direction.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
