Job Description
Clinical nurse leader for a program or area of nursing practice. Utilizes specialized knowledge and skills within major areas of focus, such as patient / family, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization / system. Typically partners with the nurse manager in leading the nursing clinical practice area. This is the journey level for an advanced practice clinical nurse specialist. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $225,253 - $253,629 (Annual Rate).
Involves advanced expertise in evidence-based nursing and practice in a range of specialty areas, such as oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatric / mental health, adult health, acute / critical care, among others. Provides direct patient care, teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, management, and systems improvement. Influences outcomes by providing expert consultation to all care providers and implementing improvements in health care delivery systems.

Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor)
Serves as an information resource on current best practices in wellness assessment techniques, tools, and methods
Conducts comprehensive, holistic wellness and illness assessments using established or innovative evidence-based techniques, tools, and methods
Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team using the nursing process to integrate the nursing perspective into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient and / or family
Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a select population of patients and / or families
Serves as a resource and mentor for clinical nurse specialists for consulting with and educating patients and their families
Ensures they receive appropriate education about their clinical condition, treatment options, patient rights, and health management
Develops, implements, and evaluates new models of practice across the continuum of care
Leads the implementation of new policies and procedures across all nursing departments
Leads collaborative projects with nurse leaders and other health care professionals to develop and introduce new or improved nursing and quality improvement practices
Collaborates with nurse leadership on developing systems and methods to assist with resource utilization, staff allocation and scheduling in response to changes in the patient census and clinical needs
Leads and mentors nursing staff within a specialty
Collaborates with nurse leadership to develop practice environments that support shared decision-making, employee engagement, and interdisciplinary coordination of care
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical experience in hematology/oncology.
- In-depth knowledge of hematology/oncology clinical practice, including diagnosis, treatments, standards of practice and patient/family education, consultation and resources.
- Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.
- Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required. Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.
- Master’s degree from an accredited Nursing program
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California (CA BRN)
- Current Clinical Nurse Specialist certification in the State of California (CA BRN)
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification
- Clinical Nurse Specialist or Advanced Practice Nurse specialty certification (e.g. ACHPN, ANP-BC, AGCNS-BC) or obtained within one year of hire
Preferred qualifications:
- Doctorate degree (PhD or DNP) from an accredited Nursing program
License/Certification:
- Master’s degree from an accredited Nursing program
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California (CA BRN)
- Current Clinical Nurse Specialist certification in the State of California (CA BRN)
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification
- Clinical Nurse Specialist or Advanced Practice Nurse specialty certification (e.g. ACHPN, ANP-BC, AGCNS-BC) or obtained within one year of hire
