Job Description

Opportunity Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Technician (Biochemistry and Chemical Sciences) to join our technical team at the University of Salford.

This is a practical, hands-on role based primarily within our Cockcroft laboratories, with responsibility for overseeing and coordinating technical provision within biochemistry and chemical sciences teaching laboratories.

You'll need a strong practical background in biochemistry, organic chemistry and chemical safety, alongside the ability to plan laboratory activities, coordinate resources and support colleagues.

You'll work closely with other teaching-aligned Senior Technicians to support the wider teaching provision, while also sharing your expertise with colleagues supporting Chemical Sciences research infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate technical provision within assigned teaching laboratories, ensuring activities are appropriately planned, resourced and supported.
  • Work with academic colleagues to review teaching requirements and coordinate technical preparation, equipment and resources.
  • Coordinate technical workloads within own area, providing guidance and support to other technicians and other colleagues.
  • Provide specialist technical expertise in biochemistry, chemistry and chemical safety, maintaining safe laboratory operations, equipment and working practices.
  • Work collaboratively with other Senior Technicians across teaching and research infrastructure, sharing expertise, resources and supporting improvements in laboratory processes and standards.

About the School or About the Department

Our technical staff sit within the Faculty of Health, Community and Life Sciences (HCLS), providing specialist support for teaching, projects and research across a broad range of scientific disciplines.

Based primarily within Cockcroft, our laboratories support academic colleagues and students from both HCLS and the School of Science, Engineering and Environment (SEE).

Our technicians have different specialist skills and areas of responsibility, but work collaboratively across laboratory areas, sharing knowledge, resources and expertise where they're needed. Senior Technicians play an important role in coordinating this work, maintaining consistent laboratory standards and supporting colleagues across the wider service.

We value practical expertise, shared knowledge and a willingness to work together to provide safe, effective and reliable laboratory support.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
