JOB TITLE:
MORF Animal Care Technician III
JOB PURPOSE:
Provide advanced animal husbandry, welfare, health monitoring, and facility support for animal facilities. Independently perform and coordinate daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals across multiple species and assigned areas; support the facility's health monitoring and disease surveillance programs; maintain animal housing and facility environments; operate, monitor, and perform routine validation checks of animal husbandry and sanitation equipment; maintain and promote appropriate biosecurity practices; assist with animal handling and routine procedures; identify and address animal care, facility, equipment, and biosecurity concerns; and provide guidance and support to less-experienced animal care personnel in accordance with established procedures and institutional requirements.
This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently perform and coordinate daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals across multiple species and assigned areas, including providing appropriate food, water, bedding, and enrichment.
- Monitor and assess animal health and welfare, recognize abnormal conditions or behaviors, document observations, and promptly communicate concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of animal care, health observations, sanitation, health monitoring, equipment checks, and other required activities.
- Maintain clean, sanitary, and bio secure animal housing and facility areas through cage sanitation, bedding changes, waste removal, and general facility cleaning.
- Operate, maintain, and monitor animal husbandry and sanitation equipment, including cage cleaning and sterilization systems; perform and document required equipment and sanitation checks.
- Support health monitoring and disease surveillance programs by collecting, documenting, reviewing, and communicating required information in accordance with established procedures.
- Apply established biosecurity practices and respond appropriately to animal health, facility, equipment, sanitation, or biosecurity concerns, including assisting with troubleshooting and corrective actions.
- Safely handle and restrain laboratory animals and assist faculty, staff, and students with routine animal procedures in accordance with training, approved protocols, and assigned responsibilities.
- Provide experienced technical support and assist with training or orientation of less-experienced animal care personnel regarding established husbandry, animal handling, sanitation, biosecurity, and facility procedures.
- Independently organize and prioritize assigned responsibilities while maintaining animal welfare, safety, sanitation, documentation, and facility standards.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate’s degree in animal science, veterinary technology, laboratory animal science, or a related field; OR equivalent combination of education, training, and directly related experience. LAT or LATG certification may be accepted in lieu of the educational requirement.
Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in laboratory animal care, animal husbandry, veterinary care, or a closely related animal care environment.
Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: University animal-use and safety training modules to be completed upon hire as well as participation in university occupational health and safety program
Experience Evaluation
Experience requirements are evaluated on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis. Relevant part-time experience will be prorated based on hours worked. For example, two years working an average of 20 hours per week is equivalent to approximately one year of full-time experience.
Applicants must include the average hours worked per week for all current and previous positions. Failure to provide this information may affect the evaluation of qualifications.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hands-on animal care or husbandry experience in a professional, agricultural, educational, retail, veterinary, shelter, boarding, research, or similar setting.
- Experience working in a research animal facility or vivarium, including animal husbandry, sanitation, biosecurity, or health monitoring.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, recognize problems, prioritize work, and take appropriate action within established procedures.
- Proficiency with common workplace software, including Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to quickly learn and effectively use new electronic recordkeeping, animal management, or facility software systems.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong listening and comprehension skills and the ability to accurately understand and apply written instructions, procedures, and technical information.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, maintain accurate records, and complete tasks consistently and on schedule.

WORK LOCATION:
On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
