JOB TITLE:

Assistant Director, Research Development

JOB PURPOSE:

Advance the University of Wyoming’s research competitiveness by identifying funding opportunities, coordinating large-scale interdisciplinary proposals, supporting faculty research and grant development, and aligning institutional priorities with sponsor opportunities. Strengthen research capacity through professional development and research development initiatives. Supervise Grant Development Managers embedded across UW Colleges and Schools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead strategic research development: Identify and promote funding opportunities aligned with institutional priorities; monitor sponsor trends; and connect faculty with high-impact opportunities.
  • Coordinate large-scale proposals: Manage complex, interdisciplinary, multi-investigator proposal development; establish timelines; facilitate collaboration; and support development of competitive federal and foundation proposals.
  • Manage limited submissions and internal funding: Administer limited submission processes, internal competitions, and seed funding programs while ensuring compliance with sponsor and institutional requirements.
  • Conduct research intelligence and strategic reporting: Monitor funding trends and sponsor priorities; analyze research activity and funding data; and provide insights to inform institutional decision-making.
  • Support faculty development and engagement: Provide workshops, training, and individualized support to strengthen grant development and research competitiveness.
  • Strengthen research development infrastructure: Development and maintain research development tools and resources, improve processes and systems, support website and resource development, and supervise and mentor staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master’s degree in a STEM field

Experience: 5 years of progressively responsible experience in research and grant development, sponsored research oversight, experience with complex grants, center or institutes in higher education or research administration.

Other: Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in a STEM field with 5 years work-related experience
  • Experience writing scientific publications, grant proposals, and securing funding
  • Experience managing multiple projects with competing priorities and timelines
  • Experience leading teams from different disciplines and varying levels of experience
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
