Position Summary

The Director of Power Generation - Electrical is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, technical excellence, and growth of Vantage Point Solutions' electrical power generation engineering practice. This position serves as the firm's lead electrical engineer for power generation projects and is responsible for the oversight, design, and quality assurance of all electrical systems associated with conventional generation, renewable energy facilities, distributed energy resources, and microgrid projects.

The Director provides technical leadership for complex power generation projects, serves as the Professional Engineer (PE) of Record for electrical engineering deliverables, and ensures compliance with applicable industry codes, standards, regulations, and client requirements. This role combines advanced electrical engineering expertise with leadership, business development, project execution, client engagement, and staff development responsibilities.

The successful candidate will oversee electrical engineering operations, mentor engineering staff, support business growth initiatives, and serve as a trusted advisor to electric utilities, cooperatives, municipalities, and industrial clients.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement strategies, policies, and best practices for the power generation engineering department.
  • Identify opportunities for growth in areas such as grid modernization, renewable energy integration, and microgrid development.
  • Align engineering services with evolving industry trends and client needs.

Business Development

  • Serve as a key client contact and maintain strong relationships with existing electric utility clients.
  • Support proposal development, project scoping, and client presentations to secure new work.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to expand the firm’s power generation engineering services.

Technical Oversight and Quality Assurance

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for the electrical engineering design of power generation facilities.
  • Serve as the Professional Engineer (PE) of Record for electrical engineering designs, studies, drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Lead the design and review of:

o Generator systems and interconnections

o Medium- and high-voltage power systems

o Station service and auxiliary power systems

o Switchgear, motor control centers, and distribution equipment

o Protection and control systems

o Power system grounding and lightning protection

o Generator synchronization systems

o Plant SCADA and automation systems

o Relay protection systems

o Electrical studies including short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, grounding, load flow, and system impact evaluations

  • Ensure all engineering deliverables meet applicable requirements including NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, NERC, FERC, RUS, state utility regulations, and client standards.
  • Establish electrical engineering standards, design procedures, quality control protocols, and best practices for power generation projects.
  • Support equipment procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, testing, and troubleshooting activities.

Project Delivery and Resource Management

  • Oversee the power engineering project portfolio to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Manage resource planning, staffing, and workload distribution across the engineering team.
  • Monitor project performance and ensure client satisfaction.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and manage engineers, planners, and designers within the department.
  • Foster a collaborative culture focused on safety, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Support training and development initiatives to strengthen technical expertise across the team.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems associated with power generation facilities.
  • Strong understanding of generator design, interconnection requirements, grid integration, protection and control systems, and plant electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience with natural gas generation, reciprocating engine facilities, combustion turbine plants, renewable generation facilities, battery energy storage systems, and microgrids.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and regulations, including:

o NEC

o NESC

o IEEE Standards

o NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E

o NERC Reliability Standards

o FERC requirements

o Utility interconnection standards

  • Experience performing power system studies and using industry-standard analysis software.
  • Strong client engagement and consulting skills with the ability to assess project risks and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with electric utilities, electric cooperatives, municipalities, industrial clients, and independent power producers.

Education and Experience

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering is required.

Power systems emphasis preferred.

Experience

  • 10-15+ years of electrical engineering experience related to electric power generation facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as lead electrical engineer on generation facility projects.
  • Experience in electrical design of conventional, renewable, distributed generation, or microgrid facilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership or supervisory experience managing engineering staff, technical disciplines, or projects.
  • Experience supporting projects through planning, design, construction, commissioning, and startup phases.

Licensure

Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering required.

Ability to obtain multi-state licensure through comity required.

Demonstrated experience serving as Engineer of Record for electrical engineering projects preferred.
