Position Summary

The Director of Power Generation - Mechanical is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, technical excellence, and growth of Vantage Point Solutions' mechanical power generation engineering practice.

This position serves as the firm's lead mechanical engineer for power generation projects and is responsible for the design, oversight, and quality assurance of all mechanical systems associated with conventional, renewable, distributed generation, and microgrid facilities.

The Director provides technical leadership for complex generation projects, serves as the Professional Engineer of Record for mechanical engineering deliverables, and ensures compliance with applicable industry codes, regulations, and standards. This role combines advanced mechanical engineering expertise with leadership, client engagement, project execution, business development, and staff development responsibilities.

The successful candidate will oversee mechanical engineering operations, mentor engineering staff, support business growth initiatives, and serve as a trusted advisor to utility, cooperative, municipal, and industrial clients.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement strategies, policies, and best practices for power generation engineering department.
  • Identify opportunities for growth in areas such as grid modernization, renewable energy integration, and microgrid development.
  • Align engineering services with evolving industry trends and client needs.

Business Development

  • Serve as a key client contact and maintain strong relationships with existing electric utility clients.
  • Support proposal development, project scoping, and client presentations to secure new work.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to expand the firm’s power generation engineering services.

Technical Oversight and Quality Assurance

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for mechanical engineering aspects of power generation facilities.
  • Serve as the Professional Engineer (PE) of Record for mechanical engineering designs and deliverables.

Lead the design and review of mechanical systems including:

o Boilers and heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs)

o Steam and combustion turbine systems

o Balance-of-plant mechanical systems

o Cooling water systems

o Fuel handling and fuel gas systems

o HVAC and ventilation systems

o Piping systems and pipe stress analysis

o Fire protection systems

o Water treatment and wastewater systems

o Thermal and process equipment

o District energy systems

  • Ensure all engineering deliverables including calculations, specifications, equipment selections, studies, drawings, and construction documents meet applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Establish mechanical engineering standards, design procedures, and quality control processes for the organization.
  • Support construction, commissioning, startup, and operational troubleshooting activities.

Project Delivery and Resource Management

  • Oversee the power engineering project portfolio to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Manage resource planning, staffing, and workload distribution across the engineering team.
  • Monitor project performance and ensure client satisfaction.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and manage engineers, planners, and designers within the department.
  • Foster a collaborative culture focused on safety, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Support training and development initiatives to strengthen technical expertise across the team.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical systems associated with electric power generation facilities.
  • Strong understanding of thermal power plant design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Experience with gas-fired generation, reciprocating engine facilities, combustion turbines, steam
  • generation systems, renewable generation facilities, and/or microgrid applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards including ASME, ANSI, NFPA, API, AWWA, OSHA, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Experience performing equipment selection, piping design, mechanical system analysis, and thermal process evaluations.
  • Strong client engagement and consulting skills with the ability to assess project risks and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Experience using industry-standard mechanical engineering and design software.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with electric utilities, electric cooperatives, municipalities, or industrial power generation clients preferred.

Education and Experience

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.

Experience

  • 10-15+ years of mechanical engineering experience related to electric power generation facilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership or supervisory experience managing engineering teams, projects, or technical disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as lead mechanical engineer for power generation projects.
  • Experience supporting engineering design through construction, commissioning, and startup phases.

Licensure

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Ability to obtain multi-state licensure through comity required.
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record for industrial, utility, or power generation projects preferred.
