Job Description

The Field Welder is a skilled structural professional responsible for executing critical welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks required for the construction and repair of seawalls, pump stations, docks, and other marine structures. This position requires a versatile welder capable of delivering high-quality welds in challenging field environments, including working over water, off construction barges, and from scaffolding. The role primarily focuses on structural stick welding (SMAW) for heavy civil and marine structures, alongside routine equipment repair and maintenance both on the job site and back at the company shop.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural field welding on marine components, including splicing sheet piles, installing sheet pile corner connectors, welding snap ties, and installing Nelson studs.
  • Fabricate and weld specialized steel rigging components and driving templates on-site or on barges to assist in setting auger piles for docks and marine foundations.
  • Utilize oxy-fuel torches, carbon arc gouging, chipping guns, and grinders to prepare joints, fit up steel, and finish welds to structural standards.
  • Perform mechanical and structural welding repairs on heavy equipment, barges, support vessels, and tools both out in the field and at the company shop.
  • Set up, break down, and safely maintain personal welding leads, machines, torches, and related fabrication equipment.
  • Work closely with the barge foreman and crew to safely rig, align, and secure steel components prior to final welding.
  • Maintain strict adherence to all company safety protocols and OSHA marine construction standards, ensuring proper use of PPE and fall protection when working over water or on scaffolding.
  • Perform projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Proven experience as a structural field welder, preferably within heavy civil, bridge, or marine construction environments.
  • Strong proficiency in structural stick welding (SMAW) utilizing 6010 and 7018 rods across all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead).
  • Working knowledge of carbon arc welding/gouging and standard wire-feed processes (MIG/FCAW) is a plus, though stick welding is the primary focus.
  • Highly proficient in using industrial fabrication tools, including torch cutting equipment, angle grinders, and chipping tools.
  • Ability to weld safely and effectively in demanding environments: over water, off deck barges, and hanging from scaffolding or staging.
  • Absolute reliability, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work seamlessly as part of a tight-knit field crew.
  • Formal AWS certification is not required; practical field capability and passing an in-house weld test are mandatory.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, kneel, squat, crawl, climb, bend, twist, and stoop while wearing heavy protective welding gear. The employee frequently is required to work in outdoor marine environments for up to eight hours, facing varying weather conditions, high heat, and rough terrain. Manual dexterity to manipulate welding leads, torches, and small tools is essential. Hearing must be sufficient for safety communication in person and via radio around heavy machinery. Vision must be sufficient to read blueprints, assess weld quality, and maintain constant spatial awareness.

The employee is regularly required to lift, carry, and maneuver welding leads, tools, and steel components weighing up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity involves working confidently and safely over water, off moving barges, and from elevated scaffolding or specialized staging.

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
