Position Summary The Director shall: • Hire, schedule, manage, discipline and terminate departmental employees including Physician and NP/PA Hospitalists according to hospital policies; • Establish program goals and objectives in accordance with hospital administration, including productivity and clinical measures; • Assure quality of care and business activities, including thoroughness, timeliness and accuracy of charting and reporting; • Monitor/maintain departmental statistics and periodically report this data to hospital administration. • Investigate complaints using standard hospital practices and provide prompt follow-up and corrective action; • Ensure compliance with regulatory authorities (JC , CMS, DOH, etc.) and Hospital policies, pathways, protocols and standards; • Participate on hospital committees as requested. • Assure quality of care for hospital employed Hospitalist physician and advance practice providers, by monitoring adherence to quality indicators.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following: 1. Serve as the physician leader for the Labor & Delivery unit, maintaining weekday presence beginning to provide operational oversight, clinical leadership, and support to physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and ancillary personnel. The Medical Director will perform fewer clinical laborist shifts per month to accommodate administrative responsibilities. 2. Oversee daily unit operations, including patient flow, staffing, unit acuity, and scheduling of elective and non-elective obstetrical procedures to promote patient safety, efficiency, throughput, and optimal utilization of resources. 3. Collaborate with the Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology, nursing leadership, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, anesthesia, neonatology, and hospital administration to improve the quality, safety, and effectiveness of obstetrical services. 4. Lead and participate in interdisciplinary huddles, safety briefings, debriefings, and fetal heart rate review sessions to strengthen communication, situational awareness, and team performance. 5. Serve as the primary physician resource and escalation point for complex clinical, operational, patient safety, and communication issues affecting Labor & Delivery, antepartum, and postpartum services. 6. Lead, support, and participate in quality improvement, peer review, chart review, and performance improvement initiatives, including efforts focused on maternal safety, cesarean section reduction, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. 7. Develop, implement, and maintain multidisciplinary obstetrical emergency preparedness programs, including drills, simulations, and team training exercises. 8. Participate in departmental, medical staff, and hospital committees and support implementation of evidence-based practices, safety recommendations, and departmental policies. 9. Promote patient, provider, and employee satisfaction through visible leadership, effective communication, timely problem-solving, and standardized clinical processes. 10. Provide direct obstetrical hospitalist services, including triage, evaluation, stabilization, and management of Labor & Delivery, antepartum, postpartum, and unassigned obstetrical patients. 11. Ensure comprehensive and interactive patient handoffs between OB Hospitalists to promote continuity of care and effective communication regarding all active and high-risk patients. 12. Review and oversee the assessment and management of patients across the obstetrical service and collaborate with Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists regarding high-risk pregnancies and complex clinical situations. 13. Provide consultation and procedural support to attending obstetricians as clinically appropriate, including labor induction and augmentation, cervical ripening, operative deliveries, and other obstetrical procedures within the scope of privileges. 14. Respond promptly to obstetrical, maternal, and postpartum emergencies and provide physician leadership during emergency events and multidisciplinary responses. 15. Lead or participate in patient-centered huddles, safety activities, and care coordination efforts throughout the continuum of obstetrical care to ensure high-quality, evidence-based patient management. 16. Serve as a clinical resource for obstetrical documentation, electronic medical record utilization, protocol adherence, and best practices in maternal care and fetal surveillance. 17. Maintain ongoing competency in obstetrical hospital medicine, fetal monitoring interpretation, maternal safety initiatives, simulation-based training, and quality improvement methodologies.

Education & Experience Requirements

1. Medical Degree (MD or DO) with Residency in Internal Medicine and a valid NYS Medical License.

2. Valid ACLS Certification.

3. Compliance with CME Requirements (Hospital, Regional, State, and Federal)

4. Board Certified in Internal Medicine

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc. • Must be able to move about the hospital, or remain stationary for extended periods of time •

• Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, have legible hand writing • Must have sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform all the procedures, techniques and skills listed in the delineation of privileges. • Ability to position self to assess and care for patients, perform required procedures • The person in this position frequently communicates with patients, must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
