The posting

The Associate Acquisitions Editor plays a key role in supporting the Commentary department's author acquisition and editorial operations. Working closely with commentary leadership, this position recruits and engages contributors, manages author communications and publication processes, maintains editorial systems and performance data, and supports initiatives that strengthen contributor relationships and improve departmental efficiency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet editorial objectives.

  1. Supports Author Outreach and Recruitment: Identifies, recruits, and cultivates relationships with new and returning outside authors through research, professional networking, conferences, LinkedIn, social media, and other outreach channels. Assists the journal editors-in-chief in expanding and diversifying the contributor base.
  2. Coordinates Author Acquisition and Engagement: Works with commentary leadership to identify timely tax topics and publication needs, solicits content from outside authors, and helps maintain an active pipeline of contributors for Tax Notes publications.
  3. Manages Author Communications and Submissions: Monitors and administers the submissions inbox, responds to internal and external inquiries regarding commentary content, routes submissions to editorial staff, and ensures timely communication with contributors throughout the publication process, including for the Procedurally Taxing blog.
  4. Administers Author Agreements and Permissions: Prepares, distributes, and tracks copyright agreements for outside authors. Coordinates permissions requests, manages reprint and repost inquiries, and maintains accurate records of agreements and permissions.
  5. Maintains Author Information and Databases: Collects, verifies, and maintains author biographies, photographs, contact information, and related databases, including contributor mailing lists and editorial records, ensuring information remains current and accurate.
  6. Coordinates Contributor Deliverables: Provides authors with publication materials following release, , and supports ongoing contributor engagement initiatives.
  7. Supports Editorial Projects and Digital Initiatives: Coordinates and assists with departmental projects including the Student Writing Competition, the internal magazine cover contest, and updating and maintaining the Write for Us and editorial council webpages.
  8. Develops and Maintains Editorial Tools and Workflows: Supports continuous improvement of acquisitions workflows by maintaining AI-assisted submission review tools, improving author management processes, and identifying opportunities to increase operational efficiency.
  9. Produces Performance Metrics and Analytics: Compiles, analyzes, and distributes regular performance reports using Domo, A-Team, and other reporting platforms. Tracks publication performance, contributor activity, and other editorial metrics to support decision-making.
  10. Provides Editorial and Administrative Support: Performs administrative and editorial functions supporting the Commentary department, including maintaining editorial records, coordinating recurring operational tasks, , and supporting publication workflows.
  11. Supports Contributor Experience: Maintains positive relationships with contributors by responding to inquiries, addressing routine publication issues, collecting author feedback, and helping ensure an efficient and professional publication experience.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA in English, writing, or journalism, or equivalent in experience required
  • 2+ years of related professional experience preferred
  • Experience with database management a plus
