The posting
At Universal Quantum we aim to make the world a better place by engineering the future of computing. Together, we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. Our machines will be capable of solving problems until now considered impossible, with applications ranging across a broad range of industries including healthcare, materials and aerospace.
We are looking for a Cryogenics & XHV System Integration Engineer (f/m/d) to play a key role in the assembly, testing and integration of the hardware that underpins our trapped-ion quantum computing systems. Working at the intersection of cryogenics, extreme-high-vacuum technology and precision engineering, you will help bring together some of the most advanced quantum hardware in the world. If you're passionate about solving complex technical challenges and contributing to technology with the potential to transform the future, we'd love to hear from you.
What You’ll Accomplish:
- Collaborate closely with Physicists, Mechanical Engineers, and Electronic Engineers to critically evaluate and ensure the Extreme-High-Vacuum (XHV) and cryogenic compatibility of all system components.
- Co-developing comprehensive assembly plans together with the Lead Integration Engineer, including sequence definitions, validation tests, resource planning, and final integration testing.
- Own the physical integration process, performing precise mechanical assembly, component inspections, and carrying out validation tests.
- Lead the hands-on execution of critical qualification procedures, including advanced leak checking, multi-day bakeouts, cryogenic thermal cycling, and functional verification.
- Define, implement, and rigorously execute cleanroom processes and protocols for the contamination-free integration of ion traps and sensitive hardware.
- Design and continuously optimise testing sequences for mechanical, thermal, and electrical characteristics at all stages of the hardware assembly process.
- Maintain the documentation of all integration activities, ensuring consistent standardised communication across different teams and stakeholders.
- Act as primary support in resolving assembly anomalies; perform root-cause analysis and implement technical solutions.
Requirements
Must-have skills:
- Extreme attention to details, ability to provide precise documentation, and strong organisational skills.
- At least 5+ years of experience in designing and commissioning of ultra- and extreme-high-vacuum systems
- At least 3+ years of experience in designing cryogenic systems or similar apparatuses (cryostats, cryogenic measurement setups)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a strong team player willing to coordinate assembly teams tactfully.
- Fluent English communication
- Flexibility to travel abroad for short periods to assist overseas teams when required.
Nice-to-have skills:
- Previous experience in designing and commissioning in-vacuum ion-traps, neutral-atoms or similar systems
- Previous experience in integration of mechanical, cryogenic and electrical components
- Previous experience working in a cleanroom, laser laboratory, or quantum laboratory
- German knowledge > B1
Please feel encouraged to apply even if you don't match all the requirements of our job description. We would love to receive your application even if you think you're only a partial match
Benefits
Competitive salary, equity options, flexible paid holiday allowance, direct insurance pension with 50% employer contributions, group life insurance, job ticket/Deutschlandticket, supplemental health insurance, personal development budget and a relocation allowance.
