About Sankofa Montessori
Sankofa Montessori is a tuition-free public charter school serving students in Kindergarten through 5th grade in Forest Park, Georgia. Our mission is to empower children with the knowledge, skills, and agency needed to lead purposeful lives.

We are seeking an energetic, student-centered Physical Education & Health Teacher to join our Flight Crew immediately for the 2026 - 2027 school year. The ideal candidate understands that physical education is an essential part of educating the whole child and can create engaging learning experiences that help students develop healthy habits, physical confidence, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a lifelong appreciation for movement and wellness.
About the Role
The Physical Education & Health Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, developmentally appropriate physical education and health instruction to students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
This role includes planning and delivering standards-aligned instruction in physical education and health, creating safe and engaging opportunities for movement, supporting students in developing age-appropriate motor and fitness skills, and teaching students how healthy choices contribute to their overall well-being.
The PE & Health Teacher will work with students across multiple grade levels and must be able to adapt instruction, activities, equipment, and expectations to meet a wide range of developmental and individual student needs.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Instruction
- Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned Physical Education and Health instruction for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
- Utilize Sankofa Montessori’s adopted Quaver Health & PE curriculum and other approved instructional resources to support high-quality instruction.
- Teach age-appropriate skills related to movement, coordination, balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall physical fitness.
- Introduce students to a variety of individual and team activities, games, sports, and movement experiences.
- Teach health concepts that support students in making developmentally appropriate decisions related to physical wellness, nutrition, personal health, safety, and healthy habits.
- Develop lessons that provide students with opportunities for active participation, skill development, practice, reflection, and growth.
- Establish clear learning objectives and communicate expectations to students.
- Use observation, formative assessment, and student performance to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
- Maintain lesson plans and instructional documentation in accordance with school expectations.
Student Development & Inclusion
- Create developmentally appropriate learning experiences that allow all students to participate meaningfully in Physical Education and Health.
- Differentiate activities, equipment, pacing, and instruction based on student readiness and individual needs.
- Implement applicable IEP accommodations, 504 accommodations, behavior supports, and other identified student supports in collaboration with the Student Support Team.
- Promote teamwork, cooperation, perseverance, leadership, independence, and good sportsmanship.
- Help students develop confidence in their physical abilities while encouraging healthy risk-taking and personal growth.
- Reinforce the importance of wellness, healthy choices, and lifelong physical activity.
Safety & Learning Environment
- Maintain a safe, structured, positive, and inclusive environment during all PE and Health classes.
- Establish and consistently reinforce expectations for safe movement, equipment use, transitions, participation, and sportsmanship.
- Maintain active supervision of students during instruction and transitions.
- Inspect equipment and instructional spaces regularly and communicate safety or facility concerns promptly.
- Organize, maintain, and appropriately store PE equipment and instructional materials.
- Ensure students understand and follow appropriate safety procedures during physical activities.
- Respond appropriately to student injuries or health concerns and follow established school procedures.
Student Culture
- Build strong, positive relationships with passengers across grade levels.
- Foster habits of excellence, including order, responsibility, grace and courtesy, and respect for others.
- Create an environment where students feel safe participating, learning new skills, making mistakes, and challenging themselves.
- Use proactive, restorative, and developmentally appropriate approaches to student behavior.
- Model Sankofa Montessori’s core values of Love, Joy, Ownership, Purpose, and Reflection.
- Support schoolwide culture expectations and routines throughout the school day.
Collaboration & Family Communication
- Collaborate with Lead Guides, Co-Guides, Student Support staff, school leaders, and other members of the Flight Crew to support student success.
- Communicate student strengths, progress, concerns, and needs with families as appropriate.
- Partner with classroom teachers and the Student Support Team when students need additional academic, behavioral, physical, or developmental support.
- Participate in student support meetings, IEP/504 meetings, or other meetings when appropriate.
- Contribute to schoolwide activities, events, and initiatives related to health, wellness, movement, and physical activity.
Professional Development & School Community
- Participate actively in staff meetings, professional development, collaborative planning, and schoolwide learning opportunities.
- Participate in coaching, observation, and feedback cycles designed to strengthen instructional practice.
- Maintain professional communication and positive working relationships with students, families, colleagues, and school leaders.
- Demonstrate flexibility, professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to contribute to the broader needs of the school community.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid or eligible Georgia educator certification appropriate for Physical Education or willingness and eligibility to obtain appropriate certification.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate physical education and health instruction for elementary-aged students.
- Ability to plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction.
- Strong classroom and behavior management skills, particularly in active learning environments.
- Ability to maintain a safe and well-managed instructional environment.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and activities for students with varying abilities and needs.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, teachers, school leaders, and Student Support staff.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including standing, walking, demonstrating physical activities, moving equipment, and participating actively in instruction.
- Commitment to inclusive education and high expectations for all students.
- Successful completion of required background checks.
Preferred
- Two or more years of successful teaching experience.
- Previous experience teaching elementary Physical Education and/or Health.
- Georgia certification in Health and Physical Education.
- Experience developing and implementing engaging physical fitness, sports, movement, or wellness programming for children.
- Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioral, physical, and developmental needs.
- Experience adapting physical activities for students with disabilities.
- Familiarity with Quaver Health & PE or similar instructional programs.
- Familiarity with Montessori education or a willingness to learn and implement Montessori principles.
- Experience working in a diverse public school or charter school community.
